After I got the date, the venues (ceremony, luncheon afterward, and at-home reception), and the officiant nailed down, I began work almost immediately on the chuppah (Jewish wedding canopy) in my avatar, because I knew it would be a bear of a job. However, we didn't really do a lot of other stuff until about 6 months before the wedding.

I have picked up small things here and there since the day we picked our wedding day/venue. I am waiting to purchase our napkins and votives but most items were purchased from weekly stops at goodwill (vintage goblets, frames, accents)

I have a two year engagement and I stated buying stuff immediately. I have been looking on yard sale sites for wedding things and the moment I see something I offer and go get it. Always better to have more that you can turn around a sell then not having what you need. I wouldn't go crazy buying every little thing but if you see something you know you have to have just go get it. Another benefit of having time is SALES! We are waiting until Black Friday to buy BM and GM gifts!!

I started about a month ago (getting married September 2018) so 14ish months before? I figured starting early was good in case I change my mind on certain things

I started with two years to go. But you have to be absolutely sure you know what you want and won't change your mind!! I've changed my color and luckily I only lost about $100 but I have things that will just be going to waste. But I've enjoyed being able to space out all of the purchases

I grabbed some things about 10 months out & may not end up using half of them, haha. I'm about 50 days out & have been accumulating the most stuff for centerpieces and whatnot over the last couple of months.

I started picking up pieces here and there right away and it's accumulated to quite a pile now!

Right away. It was a little over a year to the wedding. We are buying most of our decorations at flea markets so we have to get everything during flea market season. We knew right away the style and look we were going for so we didn't hesitate to start buying what we need.

We're not crafting so we didn't need as much lead time, but we are doing our own decor rather than leaving it to the florist. We just bought everything last week, we're getting married this October. So we didn't leave a huge amount of time, but it's also not last minute. I think if we were crafting we'd have given it at least 7-9 months. I made little needlepoint candy baskets as favors for my first wedding; it took about 6 months to make all 200!

I started like a month or two after we got engaged. One was accidental (Gold birdcage at Ross for $9, perfect for cards) and then started hitting up estate sales and garage sales for gold antique frames.

I have been engaged for a year me a half. I didn't buy things immediately but I am a little further out that you and I have bought quite a bit in the last two months because my "vision" is pretty solid now that I have my venue and florist picked out. My goal is to slowly buy things as I go so I'm not rushing at the end to find what I'm looking for at the best price. Just be sure you have. A place to store everything!

We did not start having a clear vision of our reception decor until a month and half before our wedding. We ordered the ceremony decorations (flowers and arch) completely last minute (as in two weeks before up to one day before). We got way behind in wedding planning because a close friend of mine got VERY sick (almost died) six months before our wedding. So we had about three months where we did not do anything wedding-related and spent the next three months trying to catch up. I would NOT recommend this. I had the luxury of taking off work the month prior to the wedding, which is the only way we got everything done. That being said, our vision kept changing over the course of our 11-month engagement, so I would not start until closer to your wedding (maybe 6 months).

If you have a theme start when items go on sale. My son is having a beach wedding in March so I'm getting everything now at 70% off because I won't find anything during the winter months.

We are less than a year out, and have not started. Tastes change, and the last thing I want is to waste money on something that I don't use. We will probably start buying things like the card box 4-6 months out.

We will also be renting a lot of decor through our florist.

I started as soon as we got engaged. We only have 7 months from engagement to wedding day so that does make a difference.

We had a two year engagement and many of the items I thought I wanted then, my taste ended up changing. I would say once you're 8-10 months out from your wedding, you should have a better idea of what you want. I would also suggest that once you choose your decor, stop looking for inspiration because it's likely you'll see something else that you want.
