When do you stop chasing vendors?

Amelia, on August 11, 2023 at 9:29 AM Posted in Planning 0 6
Our wedding is in 9 months. I've been in contact with a potential vendor for our wedding who is the only one of their kind. We want pie instead of cake for our wedding, and she's the only baker in the area we've found that specializes in catering pie for weddings (or at least, she's the only one that advertises it).

Initial emails were good, I was excited to meet her, and tried setting up a meeting for that week. However, the date I had suggested to meet came around, and I hadn't gotten a response from her.
She replied the next week apologizing for not seeing my email, and suggested we meet this week, and that she'll pick the location. I say that's great, I tell her what day I'm available and wait for her reply. I email her again a few days later to find a good time and place.
Again, today is the day we arranged to meet, but I've heard nothing from her.
I understand a wedding vendor can be extremely busy, but is this is a bad sign? I don't want something to go wrong closer to the day of the wedding and be spinning my wheels trying to get a hold of any of my vendors.
Is it time to move on?

I think it’s time to move on. I’m not sure if advertising pies for weddings is really necessary. Is there something extra regarding decorations on the crust that she does that you were hoping for? Wedding/event cakes tend to be multi-tier and elaborately decorated, so you want someone with experience with those designs. I don’t know if the same is necessary for a wedding pie, so any baker who specializes in pies should be appropriate.

She does do pie art, so to me, that sets her apart from other vendors. I might end up picking cake anyway just to make things easy.

Gotcha. I would still maybe reach out to other pie bakers and see if they do pie art as well. Worst case is they say they can’t.

Personally, I would move on. If a vendor's communication is that bad before booking, their communication probably won't improve once you sign a contract. Either she's too busy or maybe she is just forgetful, but in any case, she doesn't seem to want your business enough to respond to you. I would move on to a different vendor.

From personal experience, run. I was kind of like you with my HMUA where because I have naturally curly hair, I was really particular about who I booked and found someone “perfect” who both specialized in curly hair and had worked with my venue before. Communication was dicey from the start and did not improve after my trial, and my gut was telling me these were red flags but I was so convinced I couldn’t find a comparable replacement. By the time I realized I should move on, I had already signed the contract and paid a non-refundable deposit plus the first payment toward my total. I ultimately found someone even better, so that first perfect person wasn’t even the best and I lost all that money.

Definitely move on! Everyone is replaceable. Pie would be very unique and there has to be another bakery that you could at least try to work with…if it doesn’t work out, then do cake!
