When to do the Hora?

mrswinteriscoming, on June 20, 2021 at 6:46 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 5

I have decided to have a Hora at our wedding because while I no longer identify with the religious side of Judaism I was raised with, culturally it is quite important to me having been raised Jewish and being of a Russian background.

I think it is a great way to kickstart the wedding festivities so I want our Hora at the start of our reception to kick things off however I am not sure if we should instead time it after the first course when dancing begins.

On one hand, doing the Hora at the start means it kickstarts the evening, but doing it after the first course when dancing begins (we will have dancing in between meals) will be better momentum.

Thoughts on when to do it?

I would do it as the start of the dancing. I think it works better and gets everyone up onto the dance floor versus having it before dinner and then having everyone have to sit back down to eat.

I agree with this in general, but I have been at a wedding where it went: couple entrance, first dance, hora, dinner service. And that worked fine, too (I was a little surprised, but only because I wasn't expecting to dance before dinner). It was actually a fantastic way to get everyone in the party mood, and the dance floor was still crowded after dinner.

So we also had a multi-course dinner with dancing in between courses, and we had the Hora directly after the main course. It worked really well for setting the mood and as a way to kick off the 'main' portion of the dancing for the rest of the evening. We just had normal dancing in between the other courses

If it is important to follow the traditional method, it is one of the first things that happen. I will be doing entrance, first dance, horah, then dinner.

If its not important then put it wherever you want.

We'll be doing it as a cultural thing rather than religious so my concern is more in terms of what will get people up and dancing.

Option A to do it straight away means it will kick the event off on a high, but Option B of doing it after our first course of dinner is served means we will get more people up at the commencement of dancing so I'm really conflicted which works best in that regard. Hmm
