When your dress doesn't fit....

aharden, on February 27, 2016 at 10:02 AM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 22

I ordered my dress Oct 2015. Just picked it up yesterday. When I tried it on in store, the sample was a size 12, it was a little snug but for the most part fit well. They ordered me a 14 and it fits tighter than the 12 did. I honestly do not think I gained weight, and if I did it was no more than 5 pounds. They said the other sample dress has been stretched out with people trying it on (how is this possible with lace and beading..?) and that my measurements are for a 14 dress (even though the zipper won't go up where the beaded belt is). The top clasp will close though. I was pretty much humiliated while trying my dress on yesterday. Literally my worst nightmare. I'm on my period so they said that could play a factor?! And that a seamstress should be able to take the sides out a little.

My wedding is May 21 this year and I pretty much need to lose at LEAST 15 pounds by then. Has anyone else been in this situation?!

OMG.... that is awful. If the shop suggested the 14 to you based off their size charts they should have some responsibility for that I would think, maybe they can rush order you a new one. Otherwise Im sure the seamstress help, and at least you have a few months if the only option was to use weight!

I'm confused - and sad for you! So your measurements are for a size 14 and the dress is a size 14 - it should fit. Did they use the size chart for your designer? I'd ask that question. Each designer's sizes can be different. Make sure they ordered based on the chart for your dress.

Did they by chance re-measure you yesterday? If they did and you are still an 14 - It seems they need to do something to fix this. Good luck!

What would they do to fix it? They kept reassuring me that "bodies fluctuate and weight changes" but everything should be fine since the seams can apparently be taken out. I left the shop feeling sad with my dress. My mom could see I was upset and she called them back, where they again reassured me the dress is what I originally ordered....

I'm just curious as to if the measurements they took when they ordered it, match up with your designer's measurements.

Example - I got measured. My dress is a Maggie, so my consultant literally looked at the Maggie size chart while I was there and said, "based on you measurements, you are a size X for Maggie" I'm wondering if they used your specific designers size chart when they ordered.

If they used a different sizing chart - I can see where there could be a problem. (their problem) that they should do something about.

Sample dresses do stretch but if they ordered based on your measurements that shouldn't be an issue. There is usually room to let out dresses a bit so I would talk to the seamstress and see how much can be let out. I would start this process immediately.

I am so sorry! That's stressful as fuck.

Going off what jamielynn said, I had immediate Casablanca dress regret which they measured me a 12. And my second dress, Allure, was measured for a 16.

Triple check with the salon that they used the designer's size chart.

Bloating can be almost a whole size larger. Also did you have any thing on under the dress this time to help hold in or a bra? All of these factors can make the dress not fit now but fit later. Try the dress on again in a couple of weeks.

Hi Abi - have you talked to the seamstress yet about alterations or scheduled a fitting? Were you wearing the same undergarments?

Try not to panic. If the dress is not fitting right because you are bloated from being on your period then it should fit in a few days when your period ends.

I have had my dress for months and when I tried it on at home we could not get it buttoned (no zipper, all buttons up the back). I have a fitting next week, and have been worried that it won't fit and the seamstress won't be able to alter it to fit. I haven't tried it on in a few months, and I have a lost a little weight but not a significant amount so it probably won't have a big impact.

My consultant said the dresses in the shop are actually a bit bigger than the actual size because they are so worn in from so many brides trying them on. So maybe the 12 fit better because it was worn in more?

They've assured me multiple times that they used the designers sizing chart and that my measurements at the time were for a 14. My measurements now are 33.5 waist (size 14 is 32) and my hips are 43 (size 14 is 42) SO, I'm assuming I should be able to make it work by May 21- especially if I am able to get it taken out. It just sucks because I feel like a fatass not fitting into my dress! Smiley sad

I sprained my knee really bad this past January skiing. Since then I've been lifting weights and haven't been doing any cardio because of my knee. Now that it's finally feeling better I'm hoping if I incorporate cardio into my routine it will help. I'm not sure if the weights has affected my back where it won't zip....I swear, damned if you do damned if you don't!

Do they have your original measurements on file? Like the actual numbers, not just you're a size 14? What are your same measurements now? EVERY time I went to my boutique for a fitting, they measured me again and wrote down the measurements...probably as a safeguard to make sure people don't blame them for not fitting in their dresses lol. Have your measurements changed from when you were first done?

Its true that sample dresses stretch out but if the measurements were size 14 and a size 14 was ordered, then the size 14 should fit if your measurements are the same. So I would double-check them. Definitely allow the seamstress to let your dress out on the sides. I'm sorry, that is so stressful!!

Abi, if you've been lifting a lot, particularly in your back, it can DEFINITELY change your measurements. I'm dealing with the same thing now- purchased the dress in May and it was ordered in the sample size which fit perfectly, but when I went to try the dress on again during a BM fitting it didn't close. My weight has stayed the same but my BF% has gone down and I gained a lot of muscle in my back. Trying to lose a few pounds to be smaller all over in the hopes that it fits at my first fitting...if not, the shop said they can let it out a little. Crazy stressful, but as long as it's not WAY to small the seamstresses should be able to help...they can work miracles!

From your last post looks like you increased your size since you ordered it.... I have no clue why you brought up the sample size fitting as if you've increased your inches that's the issue, not how the shop ordered?

If you're concerned ask if you can use the sample dress as your wedding dress if it's larger.

Samples are absolutely stretched out. A 12 fit me fine in the store, but I ordered a 14. It fits similar to the 12 sample- it still needs to be taken in but no where near as much as I thought.

Honestly, with your wedding being in May, I'd size the dress for your current weight. I know that I'd love to drop 10 lbs, but realistically, I doubt I'll drop more than 5. Do you really want to spend the last 2 months stressing over your dress fitting?

That is horrible.... Make sure to wait until you are back to normal (less bloating) before you have it fitted.... Sounds like the dress doesn't run true to its measurements or size

Is it something that putting a corset back in would fix? That would give you the room you need and if you lose the weight it's no big deal.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. It does seem like the shop is really confident in being able to let it out, so that's good. However, I think if I were your shop I would've sized up to a 16 since your measurements were slightly above the 14 range. I've never heard of sizing down in those instances. My waist was half an inch over and they wanted me to get the next size up. I am glad I did; It fits perfect in the waist whereas the size that was technically closest, would've been uncomfortable. I know it was only 1.5 inches of your waist, but in non stretchy fabric, that's a lot.

I'd definitely go back for another fitting after your period. I gain weight every month during my period- 3-5 pounds on average but sometimes more. It usually drops off within a couple days after.

I had a similar issue with a Casablanca dress. I was freaking out but my mom, sister, and seamstress assured me that the dress had plenty of room to take it out and most dresses should have that as well. Check with your seamstress before you completely stress out! Your dress probably has enough to take out too!
