Where can I find bird cage centerpieces?

Nic.Dee, on November 27, 2012 at 12:42 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 19

I'm trying to find online -- or at a store somewhere in the NY/NJ region -- where I can purchase bird cages for my centerpieces. Anyone have any ideas? I saw them on save-on-crafts.com, but a few of you told me it wasn't a good website.

My wedding is 500 days away, but I'm trying to get many things out of the way and try to DIY as much as I can. If you've done bird cage centerpieces with some flowers inside, did you find that to be cheaper than a traditional vase with flowers? I figured that'd be cheaper..that's also why I'm looking into it now before I start going to florists and getting prices. Any opinions help! Thanks!

Have you ordered from save on crafts before? I heard their shipping is expensive, too.

    I don't have a Hobby Lobby nearby :-/

I saw a post on here within the last couple days with someone's wedding pics that had bird cage centerpieces...think she said she got them at Ross, but you might also try Home Goods, too, if you have them in your area.

I've been seeing them all over. Michael's Crafts has nice ones and they have a 40% off coupon every week. Oriental trading has them too...I just haven't seen them to know the quality. We are also looking at TJMaxx, Marshalls, and Home Goods. I need 4 of them so if you find good ones at a great price...please let me know too please Smiley smile And remember that you can always spray paint them if you find them in the wrong color. If you only need 4 as well I'd be happy to send you mine after my wedding in 2013! Here are a few links.

If you plan on having the cages professionally filled by a florist, I would start looking into different florists and ask if they have birdcages for rental. It is becoming a more popular "trend" for centerpieces, so a lot of floral companies have cages on hand.

Our florist had cages for rental, however I still preferred to buy my own because I had a specific vision with wooden birdcages, which aren't as common as metal (which is what our florist had). Our florist charged us $30 per cage to fill them with flowers and vines.

I bought my cages from Save on Crafts. The shipping cost was the biggest negative thing about them, however like I said in my reply to your other post, they charge the actual shipping cost. They just don't give any discounts.

The birdcages cost me about $50 each after shipping.

So all in all, my centerpieces were $80. I could have probably gotten them cheaper if I had rented, however I also sold my cages for much of what I paid so it balanced out.

Almost Mrs. P, that's crazy! I'd be looking for a different florist lol

These were our centerpieces. We had 8 total, filled with flowers, greenery and vines. We allowed them to be creative and do different variations for each.

I like your birdcage idea. I've done them (as well as the Cinderella Coach forms), and they are quite beautiful when they're decorated.

My experience has been that using a birdcage (or any type of wire form) as a centerpiece allows me to order fewer stems than a traditional vase/container centerpiece. After all, when we do traditional centerpieces, the holder (whether simple or ornate) is usually a theme enhancing item that complements the floral arrangement. In the case of the birdcage look, the cage IS the centerpiece. The flowers, while absolutely necessary, are doing the complementing. In other words, traditional holders enhance the flowers, but with cages and wire forms, the flowers enhance the holder. Your overall cost, of course, depends entirely on how much you want to spend on the cages as well as how many cages you need. But in terms of ordering stems, I think you'll end up ordering fewer stems than a traditional centerpiece would require.

    More to say.

My first thought for locating birdcages was G&G Distributors in Saddle Brook, NJ. I noticed you said you were in the NY/NJ area, as I am, and I know they have reasonably priced wire forms in their store. I didn't see birdcages on their site, but if you gave them a call, they could let you know for sure. You also mentioned Save-On Crafts. I've used them several times, and while they did get the amount of items wrong once, the other items I've gotten from them have been pretty much as described. Right now, they've got a decent selection of birdcages on sale (everything from 2 for $25 to 3 for $37). Even if they mess up your order, you have plenty of time to have them fix it. If you're thinking about doing something besides a small vase of flowers in the cage, you might want to consider threading mini ivy through the bars, and, with the door open, allow some of your buds to spill out (mini roses?). Add moss and more buds in oasis to the floor of the cage, and you're in business.

The shipping for Save on Crafts depends on where you live... they are located in California, I think, and I'm in Washington. I thought it was reasonably priced, and my items quickly arrived!

They did forget to pack a box of hanging lanterns.. I ordered 16 and only got 4, and they rushed the extra dozen out to me without any fuss at all! I was a little surprised that I didn't have to "prove" that I didn't get the entirety first shipment.

I looked online at various sites, including Ebay...and several stores locally (Crafts 2000, etc.) and could not find anything as reasonable as renting the bird cage we are using....renting one from our event design vendor is only costing us $7. We are not putting any flowers or anything inside the bird cage as we are using it for the centerpiece for the gift table for cards to go into. But you could have a florist (if you're using real) or you could create a small arrangement from silk to place inside the cage for a more decorative centerpiece. I found rolls of wide tulle ribbon and silk flowers at Dollar Tree...I am making a bow w/ flower accents to attach to the top of the bird cage....so all totaled I will have less than $10 in it.

@Jessica -- Thanks for your feedback! Good to see that you've used them and had a fairly good experience.

Thanks, Terri! I have yet to look at a florist, obviously since my wedding is so far away :-/ But I have some florsists in mind, and will ask if they have bird cages to rent. I'd rather do that if it's cheaper! Anything to save some money with this expensive wedding will help!!

This is the bird cage we are renting for $7...it's pretty good size..plenty of room to add flowers inside of it....ivy, etc. The event rental place we found this one at also carries black and bronze..some we checked on just had black or just had white.
