Currently my Finance and I have discussed it and we do have a plan but others sometimes makes it seem soo... Almost making me feel like we are setting up to fail because we are not the richest of people and don't have EVERYTHING in order right now. I know I'm not giving you enough details to fully understand but I just wanted to hear your stories.
If you are newly engaged do you already know where you both will live? Will you rent, do you already have a home? Are you staying with the in-laws until you get your own space?
Do you think persons should figure all this out before even saying yes?

We’ve been renting a home together for years before even getting engaged haha We’ve just been going with the flow of what we feel ready for. We’re saving for our wedding right now and then we’ll start looking to buy a home.

Lived in an apartment for two years, then bought a home together after. Some would advise against buying a home before you're married but we creating a contract while we were dating to make sure if anything happened it would go smoothly. I would live with someone before being married though!

Now, the plan is to stay in our home after we're married!

DH still lived with his parents in Manhattan when we met, and I had 3 roommates.

Eventually, with family help, I bought a small condo right outside of NYC, while DH moved in with 3 roommates IN NYC. It's amazing how long-distance a subway ride can make you.

He moved in with me (...I made a NYC boy move to NJ, and I will always consider that a win... but I've conceded we'll move to Manhattan if we can ever afford it) after we'd dated about 4 years. We didn't get engaged for another 2 1/2 years after that.

But I'm older than him, so our situations were a bit different.

We are living apart currently mostly due to job situations but it's less than an hour and we travel back and forth without issues at least once a week.

Leading up to the wedding my mom has to sell her house due to mobility disability issues and is unable to live on her own and sometimes needs help. We have an understanding she has to live with us until she passes however long that may be. We will have a 3 bedroom apartment so his little one from his previous marriage can have a room to stay in when she's visiting. Some would say that's not the best but the anxiety from knowing my mom is on her own and could need help it's our choice to live this way. As long as the choice is made together it works.

Yes Hannah, everyone's story is indeed unique and I think the problem always starts with trying to fit your story into someone else's or what others think the perfect situation is. This forum has already helped me see how different everyone's story is and how my story can be just as much of an inspiration to someone down the line. Thank you for sharing!

LOL Asia, I know how it feels to get tired at the thought but like many others have said in this discussion, keep the communication open and everyone's story is unique. I'm sure it will turn out well in the end and all these hurdles will make for a stronger and more intimate relationship. That's my hope for you two!

Thanks for sharing Allie, very interesting story and proof that even when it's all planned out, it doesn't always turn out just as we plan.
