Which is a better idea for a wedding no food or potluck reception?

Hi! I'm excitedly planning my wedding for next year! To have my perfect day I'm making cuts whenever possible. We will be having a cash bar to save money. We've already set up a GoFundMe so guests can contribute to the wedding. I know people will be excited to contributed. Another good idea I'm having is to have a tiered reception with different guests invited to different events, which I think would work for us. I'm just not sure what to do about food. We can't afford to feed everyone. Some of my friends say to skip the food- no one eats at weddings anyway and people will just want to drink and mingle and can get food before or afterward. But one of my aunts was saying she'd want food and I should have a "potluck" reception where guests bring different items- she thinks guests would be honored to be included and be excited to help out! I'm already having my friends and family do most of the labor for my wedding so I'm sure everyone would love to help out more. But maybe food just isn't necessary. What do you guys think?

I think some of the criticism is a little harsh. My ideas are great! I'm just looking to cut costs and raise funds so I can have 400 guests and have my dream dress! It's my day after all! You only get one day. My guests are honored just to be invited to my wedding and they shouldn't have any complaints. I appreciate all the feedback but I was really just specifically wondering which is better forgoing food or having a potluck. But today I had a third idea- what if I had it catered but charged my guests for the plates (on top of the GoFundMe donations)? This could also work! I'd just have to get them to prepay. Any thoughts?

Truth be told, it’s no different from the “cover your plate or don’t attend” and “cash gifts only allowed” mentalities that a number of people will choose those hills to die on and that if you don’t agree 1000% then you are a horrible person.

You want 400 people to sit around for hours (after setting up your wedding) to see you parade around in a dress that they don’t care about while they’re hungry and bored? Oh and you want them to pay for the dress while they’re at it. Good luck with that. Lol

I sincerely hope this is fake. This is all kinds of wrong. And that’s putting it lightly. So basically you’re asking your guests to pay for YOUR wedding, but then also making them pay for their own drinks and bring their own food. What exactly are YOU providing for THEM, here? As the bride and groom, y’all are the hosts. Not your guests. They are just that- guests. And where is this gofundme money going if you’re asking for contributions but then not using it for your wedding food or drinks? Are you basically just pocketing the money at that point? What are you providing them for giving up their day to celebrate you and probably also brought you a gift. Also, a lot of people don’t want potlucks right now since we are still in a pandemic. And then a tiered reception where they’re only invited to specific events? What? So, again, you want them to pay for your day, pay for their food, pay for their drinks, bring you a gift, and they’re still only invited to certain events? No. Just no. If you can’t afford to have even a cheap wedding, (not asking the guests for contributions and AT LEAST feed them), then do a courthouse. Or a backyard bbq. You said it’s next year, so why don’t you start SAVING and pay for your own wedding. This is all just sooo selfish.

Ok this is definitely fake. If by some chance it’s not, you are delusional and downright selfish. But definitely just seems like a troll post.

This can’t be real. If not, it’s getting ready to be Reddit gold.
You can’t expect people to crowdfund your wedding. I don’t think they care that much. If you can’t afford to have a wedding for 400 people-you cut your guest list dramatically to the point where you can feed people and offer them beverages (most people also agree a cash bar is a no no) without them paying on the front end and the back end. If I got this invite in the mail it would be a whole lot of Nope.

Yes it should be your day but within reason and that is limited by your budget. I want to get married in Buckingham palace but I’m not a royal. I have to be realistic and so do you..

Maybe just buy a stop watch, buy one 6 foot sub sandwich and everyone just gets like, 15 seconds with the sandwich.
