Which is cheaper to have a cater?

Bridget, on May 5, 2015 at 3:32 PM Posted in Married Life 0 37

I know it varies on caters, but I am wondering which is cheaper, ordering food from a restaurant or from a grocery store? The reception venue I am looking has a lot of catering options including their in-house cater with the starting price of $14 per person of 6 dishes (buffet style). It is sort of hard to find a cheap, but good caters around here unless I am not looking hard enough. I am on a tight budget of around $2000 or less of reception food for about 150 guests.

    2000 for 150 guests?

Cut the guest list and do it now. Seriously. I know you don't want to hear that, but you can barely feed a person McDonalds on that, never mind that many people for any length of time at an event.

You'd also have to do a lot of research into grocery stores and other places that cater and compare your options.

Also if you go with the 14/person option that's only 100 over your budget.

Cut your guest list or serve cake and punch at a non-meal time.

I have to ask if brides-to-be even do any legwork before asking questions anymore?

I got a food truck that caters as well (not a food truck at the wedding) and I've gotten my 80 guests approximation at 1200

I really don't think you want to host 150 people with Safeway Potato Salad.

Do you have golden corral? I am getting fried chicken, 4 sides, rolls, tea, water and lemonande for 160 people for about 1500. This is buffet style but with staff to serve. You can find someone to do it for your budget depending on your area. No you cant serve a lobster dinner but it is doable. I even found a actual caterer in my area for around the same price but FH loves golden corral and we are having a very laid back wedding.

I had look through my guest list, and it is now about 125 guests.

Yeah, I am planning to go through stores, and compare my options. Yeah, $14 a person with that many guests is not that bad.

Actually, my boss spent only about $300 for feeding 100 guests for her wedding, so I will probably go ask her for more information about how she did it. I know she told me that her Deli managers made the food for her reception. By looking at her photos, it almost looked like a potluck style. I actually do work for a grocery company that does catering packages.

Yeah, my mother and sister told me that $14 is a good deal that I should do that option.

No, there is no Golden Corral in Oregon. :/ Yeah, there are some caters that do have some reasonable deals. I am planning to go through and compare them.

AG13, thanks for the heads up about Golden Corral!

Bridget, there's absolutely nothing wrong with having a grocery store cater your wedding, though people on WW may tell you otherwise. That said, where are you located? I'm in West Texas where 2000 would probably be plenty for 100 guest, but 150 might be a stretch. You really will get a better idea of your options if you call places you have in mind to see what 2000 will get you and decide if you're satisfied with offering X to your guests.

    Good luck!

Thank you Nye. I am located in NE Oregon. Oh wow, that's amazing to feed that many people with 2000 over there. I believe that it is possible, it requires a lot of thinking and researching. I am so glad that I am not doing the traditional Asian wedding that invites about 200-500 guests, or more. I am inviting close family and friends. Yeah, my father told me to do that too including restaurants. Smiley smile

    Thank you again!

Remember gratuity and tax. My venue has a 18% gratuity fee plus tax. My $25/head is actually $36/head.

We were ALL over the map on centering and debating best options ( our budget similar) and found an amazing deal with a caterer looking to do promotional to get more business at our venue!

At one point we were going to do the main dishes ourselfs possibly from drop off caterer and found by Google search a really tasteful way to ask guests to bring a dish but the way it was worded ensured that people/ guests wouldn't feel obligated!

The Google serch took some time.... I thought this was a great idea but it wasn't what we ended up doing

We lucked out. A nearby restaurant delivered chicken marsala, tortellini, sausage pasta, veggies, salad, and garlic bread for what amounted to less than $10 per person. But we had to serve it ourselves.

I cannot even on this thread. Golden Corral is literally not an acceptable catering option. I'm sorry, their sanitation practices have been in question for years.

I once had to eat KFC at a wedding. Yes, KFC. There was cold fried chicken on trays, mashed potatoes, gravy and biscuits. Was it cheap? I'm sure it was. Was it a GOOD IDEA? No. It was awful.

Not saying you need to spend a fortune, but cheap is usually cheap for a reason. Do your research, and don't pick something solely on cost. Quality matters too.
