Which SS Office / Does it matter..?

QueSeraSera, on December 14, 2017 at 6:06 PM Posted in Married Life 0 22

When changing my last name, do I have to go to the SSA office in the county of my permanent address or can I go to any location?

I never changed the address on my license or at the banks or for anything "official" when I moved in with my DH (at the time, BF) a few years ago. His address is also his parent's house as well. We currently rent a house about 2.5 hours south of the addresses on our licenses, and we don't plan on living here long so we never made the address change.

Am I making any sense?!

Do I have to go back "home" (parents) to change my name or can I go to the nearest SS office & DMV?

I went to one slightly further from my home because it actually had good parking. Pretty sure it's not important which one you go to

By law you have 30 days to update your address, so yeah I would definitely take care of that now!

Well shoot. He's been here 5 years and I've been here 2.5 years.

How is this different from college students living elsewhere but using their parent's address as their permanent address?

We can go to any office here. However, if you get a big jerk wad like I did the first words out of his mouth will be "you know there's an office in your county, right?" Why yes Mr. wad I know but your line is always shorter and the parking lot is easier to get to. Oh, and I live 15 min closer to this one. It's been a couple months and I'm still a little salty about that if you can't tell Smiley smile

@op as a college student I considered my parents address as my permanent address still, so that's why I didn't change it in school.

I went to a ss office in Seattle and I live in Arizona so I'm pretty sure you're good to go to any!

@Brianna - that's what I'm saying. If I still have one address as my permanent address, why do I need to change it just because I live somewhere else?

I think if you and H have been where you are now for over 2.5 years, that's your permanent address. Bills, insurance, and work documents should all have your permanent address too. I waited a while when I moved from Iowa to Illinois to change my address on everything just because it is kind of a pain, but I felt like I was hiding lol.

Makes sense. I guess it seems like a waste of money to me to keep getting a new license for every rental Smiley tongue

Agreed lol but u don't think you have to get a new license every time you move (in Illinois). You just have to update your registration and your records with the SOS.

Here's where I have found information when we have looked at possibly switching apartments: https://www.dmv.org/il-illinois/change-address.php

Brianna is right. You can just go to cyberdriveillinois.com and change your address associated with your license. No cost. When they run your info it shows correctly.

Here's a new question. How do they know where you live or not live?

I was pulled over a couple weeks ago because I missed/ didn't see a stop sign. He looked at my license and everything and let me go. Didn't mention the address. Anyone know?

The addresses for your license, registration, and insurance should all be the same. Most places don't charge to change the address on your license, just to renew it when it expires.

@Bulbasaur - they are all the same! I just don't live at that address, although I do visit often. When I still lived with my parents and we moved houses, i had to pay for a new license / address change.

Yeah, I use my parents address for voting as well! For anything "official", i use their address. For regular mail and work, i use our current address
