Which tier do you plan on cutting into?

Erin Wood, on April 26, 2017 at 2:09 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 32

Just curious which tier of cake you plan to cut for the cake cutting ceremony? I'm thinking I want to cut the top tier and surprise FH with this coconut rum cake we saw on The Best Thing I Ever Ate. I know people often save the top tier so I was thinking of just saving the cake that's left after our tiny cut.

We are only going to have a single cake for the cutting and cupcakes for the guests

We'll probably do top tier, although I hadn't put much thought into it actually. We decided instead of taking the top tier home, we're going to order a smaller version of the cake on our 1 year anniversary instead.

I was going to do the bottom tier. That's what I've always seen. We're taking the top tier for our anniversary, so I don't want to cut into it.

We are cutting the top tier as that's the only one that will be real! All of the cake for the guests will actually be made separately.

I would talk to your baker but I would imagine that cutting a piece out may make saving the cake for the following year more challenging as it may dry out more easily. If you do want to save the cake for the anniversary maybe you can do a small cake the size for saving.

@Meaghan- I spoke with my baker. She's actually a friend of mine and she said if I wrap it well it'll be okay. Her and her husband saved their top tier and even though it wasn't cut and wrapped well she said it tasted weird and the texture was horrible. Lol! I'm not expecting much in the way of yummy cake.

Hmm good question. I'm thinking we'll do either the top or bottom layer (we'll have 3 total). We don't have to worry about saving the top tier as our bakery makes us a new cake for our anniversary free of charge.

We did the bottom since the top tier was roughly level with my face. Cutting that high off the table and look awkward! Would you offer this flavor to your guests too, or just you and your husband? Not a fan of serving something just to you two but not to guests.

Why not get him a special cake for after the wedding? You will likely be hungry after the reception and want something to eat in your room!

We are cutting the top tier. Our baker provides a complimentary mini cake on our anniversary so we won't have to deal with properly freezing our cake.

We were instructed to cut into the bottom tier. The baker had actually made two top tiers: one to be put on the cake and the other that was meant to be saved for freezing for our anniversary.

To be honest, I don't think I would have trusted us cutting into the top tier. I think the baker and our venue knew exactly what they were doing when they told us we would be cutting into the bottom tier.

We will probably do the middle tier and save the top layer for us (to eat on after the wedding) we're not saving a top tier because it's a waste of money and everyone says it's basically inedible after a year so our baker is making a fresh replica for our one year.

I think we are doing the bottom tier. The cake is right for the # of guest. Our bakery will provide us w a cake one year later if we provide a photo of the cake

We will do the bottom tier, but not keeping the top for later. My mom said she did this and it was pretty disgusting after being frozen for so long.

@MrsSki- That's a good point. It might just be too high up.

I think people will be fine as far as us taking one bite of a different cake than we are serving. A lot of people don't even like coconut. I've never even noticed what kind of cake the bride and groom are eating. That's a weird thing to not be a fan of. We will have 3 different cake options for guests and a dessert bar with chocolate mousse, fruit tarts, macaron and chocolate covered strawberries. I think they'll be fine :-)

The resort is sending cake to our room for us to eat late night. I was also thinking of getting snacks to munch on. We'll probably pour into our room around 2am and might be hungry. HaHa!

We have a 4-tier cake, and our baker told us that we will be cutting the bottom tier (which is going to be MY favorite - sucks for FH lol), and that the top tier is what we will go home with.

I actually hadn't thought about this, but since our bottom tier is fake, we will probably cut into the one right above the bottom tier (we wanted a 5 tier cake but only needed 4 to feed our guests). Each layer of our cake is a different flavor but the biggest tier is our favorite flavor! (pink champagne cake with mixed berry mousse).

I've heard from multiple people, including my baker, that the cake is inedible after a year no matter how well you wrap it. She gave us the option of making us a separate top tier to take home, or 3 cupcakes in each flavor of the cake we chose, so we opted for the cupcakes! We will probably eat them later that night in our hotel room and/or on the plane the next morning to our honeymoon!

We're taking the top tier home, and starting the cutting with the second tier
