White gold ring turning yellow??

Catherine & Nick, on April 28, 2015 at 11:54 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 27

I work as a nurse, and when I first got engaged, my coworker mentioned that the hand sanitizer we use strips the rhodium plating on white gold rings, so the yellow gold is more visible. I didn't believe her until I inspected my ring today and saw the small grooves holding my solitaire diamond were yellow toned! Has this happened to any other brides who work in healthcare or use hand sanitizer frequently?!

Yep, sure does. I have had mine redipped 1x already and getting ready to get it done again. I am planning on soldering mine soon. Makes me wonder what that stuff does to my skin. We got my rings at Helzburg so I got the warranty and it is covered for life. I think its like $50 each time otherwise.

Talk to the jeweler and they sometimes will re-dip your ring as part of the warranty. As a whole though, it's not uncommon especially when you come in contact with any sort of chemicals. (Sanitizer in your case)

This will happen to anyone, not just people using hand sanitizer all the time. White gold isn't naturally white, typically it's yellow with things like nickel added to it and then dipped in rhodium. If you're always working with your hands, wearing it every day, etc the rhodium will

Come off. I have some clients at work that have to have their rings redipped yearly in order to keep it white. It's one of the big reasons a lot of people pick platinum over gold.

It's one of the issues with rhodium plating.

(Newer "white gold" pieces are not made the same way as they once were - while the newer method provides a higher shine, it's prone to damage.)

I had a similar issue with two rings I got for my 16th. One is a very old piece, the other was newer and very shiny - the newer one was wrecked after two years of reasonably regular (3-4 times a day) sanitizer use.

I got my ring from FH's family jeweler back in Ohio, so sadly I'll have to find a place out here in California to have it done - I definitely should've considered platinum, but it's a little pricey, isn't it?? It also worries me since it's only been a couple months since I've been engaged and it's already starting to strip off - maybe I should just not wear it to work? That makes me sad too...

Boo, really? I also work in a hospital and use a ridiculous amount of hand sanitizer... I haven't really noticed this happening but I also try to clean my ring at home once a week. I guess if it's being stripped though, it doesn't matter how often I clean it? This makes me sad! @Catherine, I would never consider not wearing it to work! It's so pretty...

I'm a hairstylist so I work with different products all day, everyday. My ring had to be dipped a few times already because it turns yellow frequently from exposure to all the chemicals in products. FH had asked me if I wanted platinum and I said no because, even though it's very strong and stays silver, it's hard to buff out any dings or scratches on it. My mother had a platinum ring/band and no matter home much they buffed it, it still looked dull from the little scratches on it.

Yep, this has happened to me. I use hand sanitizer a lot. Heather A is right about the plating coming off in time anyways though... this is why most jewelers will allow for a free plating on a set schedule.

The same thing happened to me but thankfully having it redipped was part of my protection plan so I have mine done every six months. It was just from everyday wear and now I only really wear it two or three days a week!

I definitely didn't know this was a thing! My ring isn't rhodium plated yet and now my mom's recommendation to wait until 6 mos or less before the wedding makes sense!

I'm actually really glad you posted this because the part of my band right underneath my finger...I've been swearing to FH has been turning yellow and he thinks I'm crazy. So maybe I'm not after all!

Mine has needed a re-dipping so bad for a couple of years. My diamonds look very yellow. It grosses me out. I've scrubbed and scrubbed, and my ring is clean. The yellowing makes me want to throw my ring in the garbage. What a waste of money. I don't have time to make the 3 hour trip to the jewelry store all the time to make my ring look pretty. For what he paid for it, it should stay pretty on its own! I'm a nurse, and I wash my hands constantly, whether I'm working or not. White gold was a terrible choice for me.

My sister works in healthcare and is constantly washing her hands and using sanitizer. She has to get her ring dipped quite often. Every 6 mo or so.

I do not work in healthcare and I really only wear my ring when I leave the house and mine does it too. Particularly on the underside like Nicole said. I try to be mindful of it when I hold things, like a shopping cart, for example, that it's not rubbing against it. You should see the difference when I hold it next to my unworn wedding band, ugh! It's gross looking lol. I'm going to have it re-dipped close to the wedding so the bands match.

I work in healthcare and use hand sanitizer constantly. No noticeable changes with my ring yet and I have been wearing it 11 months.

That is normal wear and the jeweler said that my ring warranty covers re-dipping every 6 months, but most people do it once a year or less. I might get mine re-dipped before the wedding so it matches my wedding band perfectly for pictures and they can wear down together. But this is very normal. Since all gold is naturally yellow, they need to add something to make it white. And that wears off over time. This should most definitely be included in your warranty plan. If not, I'm sure you can go places to pay to have it done.

It hasn't happened to mine...yet... A chef that I work wears her on a chain while she's working. She says it sucks but it better on a chain than getting ruined
