White gold ring turning yellow??

I work as a nurse, and when I first got engaged, my coworker mentioned that the hand sanitizer we use strips the rhodium plating on white gold rings, so the yellow gold is more visible. I didn't believe her until I inspected my ring today and saw the small grooves holding my solitaire diamond were yellow toned! Has this happened to any other brides who work in healthcare or use hand sanitizer frequently?!

This is very normal. The likelihood of it happening depends on the karat and quality/source. I say that because I have some really old white gold that hasn't turned yellow and some turn yellow in 6 months.

Catherine, one of the other reasons that this can happen is the acid level in your body. I have worked in jewelry for many years and I saw that some women and men had to have their ring dipped more often than others due to that.

One thing to keep in mind is that with gold either white or yellow and it does not matter if it is 10k, 14k, or 18k, that every time you polish the ring you lose metal which over a number of years can make the band thinner.

One more suggestion is that if you are planning to always wear your engagement ring and wedding band together, have them soldered. This will help with the ring rubbing against each other and causing more wear and tear on each piece.

Yea happens to mine and I don't work in healthcare. I get it re-dipped every 6 months at the inspection.

Technically it's called re-plating not re-dipping. My jeweler corrected me when I used that term. You are supposed to get it done every 6-12 months.

I have never had this issue as I alway take my ring off when I wash my hands and I'm allergic to sanitizer. My FMIL is a nurse and she never wears her rings to work for that reason among others. Perhaps a yellow gold band for work?

Thanks everyone for your advice and suggestions! I'm going to contact the jeweler today to see what they suggest also. I guess I need to find someplace here to get my ring re-plated, and maybe consider wearing my ring on a necklace while at work? FH also discussed a "work ring" but I don't think it's in our budget. Luckily it's not super noticeable yet (I'm just being anal about inspecting it so closely).

    ETA: Re-plated, not re-dipped, thanks to @FutureMrsWalton!!

Yes!!!! I’ve had my ring since December and I was out looking for wedding bands yesterday!! Totally shocked how my ring is already a yellowish color compared to the brand new white gold in a store. I’m also an RN and wear my ring to work.
