Who bought their dress in a smaller size??

Teagan, on October 7, 2014 at 4:13 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 33

I just got the confirmation email today that I have an appointment at a bridal store in Boston (I'm in Vermont). I'm pretty excited! I have been mentioning on here how eager I'm getting to make big purchases like my dress. The appointment is in one month from today. My goal was to lose 40 pounds before the wedding. I'm almost at 10, and hoping to get to at least 15 by the appointment. My wedding is 9 months out, 8 months from the appointment. I know I can lose the remaining 30 in that time. Did anyone else buy a dress in a smaller size and work their butts off to fit into it??

I do not recommend this at all. You say you know you can lose weight and that's awesome but there are unforeseen circumstances. I am on a weight loss kick myself right now. I started last year but then I was in a car accident and then 2 months after that I slipped on icy steps and broke my leg and ankle and needed surgery so I couldn't even work out for at least 6 months. Not trying to be motherly, but sh!t happens lol

I ordered a 6 and I had the option for the 4 because if I lost 5-7 pounds I could have gone in it but didn't want to be a prisoner to my weight. Its easier to take in a dress then to take it out. Im down 5, need another 5 by may but never a guarentee

I would not recommend this. like elyse said, that's great you say you an lose weight and i'm sure you can. but on top of the stress of planning a wedding, don't throw a diet or losing weight in too. buy the size you are now. if you end up losing weight, that's great! it's way easier to take a dress in a size or two rather than worrying about being able to take it out. :/

That's great you're making progress towards your goal! I need to do the same lol. That said, I would be careful buying a gown that's too small. Alterations can always take a dress in if need be. Its a lot harder- and more $$$- to make a dress bigger.

My plan is to buy a dress that is 'snug' but still fits. That way, if I lose all the weight that I want, great, I can get it taken in. But if I don't hit my target size, the dress will still fit.

This is the #1 reason I advise against ordering smaller: you might lose the weight, but your body still may not be the way it needs for your dress!! You may be smaller in different areas and not as small in others. Pick a dress that looks amazing NOW

I would buy your normal size. It is easier to take in than it is to take out.

It sure wasn't on purpose that I did it. Somehow in all the discussion I wanted a smaller size. Mom didn't want to do that. So I agreed to order normally and she thought I wanted smaller so she ordered smaller. And I stubbornly chose to keep it when it came in and now I am working my ass off (literally!) but it still won't zip up and my first alteration appointment is in a week and a half!

Sure will I fit in it before the wedding? Most likely. (God if I don't I will scream!)

But it's just caused A LOT of drama between her and I, and I have no control of where my weight is coming off. I need to lose in my chest but my stomach, legs, and arms are losing. My hips have gone nowhere. -_- Save yourself the hassle and worry and DON'T! From personal experience here....DON'T! Worse case you have your dress the size you are closer to the appt taken in. That will be a better feeling than possibly letting it out or stressing so much for months on end. The planning alone will do that to you.

I would also like to just throw in, and I hate when people say this about me so I apologize, but you look super tiny. Are you sure you need to lose that weight?

I don't think I would order it more than a size or two in either direction. Like others have said, it's easier to take it in. Also I've known people to plateau in their weight loss, so you might not lose it as quick as you want. If you're generally a pretty disciplined person though, you should be able to do it.

I bought a smaller size...ish. My dress is an inch too small in the hips, but if I ordered a size up it would be 3 or 4 inches too big in the bust and waist. I feel fine with this though, because a year ago I injured my knee and haven't been able to do any exercise at all. I went from being pretty fit to not being able to walk more than a couple blocks and I definitely notice a difference in my hip area. I just had surgery and should be back to my old routine soon, so I am confident I will lose the bit of weight I gained fairly quickly. Also my dress can be let out an inch or two easily.

I would get the size you are or even one size up. you will have to take to a seamstress anyway... and more fabric to work with is better than none!

Don't do this. If you DONT lose the weight, it's a lot harder to add fabric and make the dress bigger than it is to take it in where it needs to go. Lots of bridal salons won't let you just pic a random size, they have to go from your current measurements

I would recommend to buy the size you are now. My wedding is the weekend after yours and I said I wanted to lose between 15-25 pounds. So far I've had no luck. I tried on a size 10 at DB and the dress was really snug. I could zip it but could barely move around in it. I ordered a size 12 just to be on the safe side if I don't lose the weight. They can always take it in if it's too big. Good luck on your weight loss journey!

My MOH bought a size down. She regretted it. It didn't fit right, she was uncomfortable the whole day and night, and she ended up leaving the reception earlier because of it. Buy the size you are. They can alter down sizes.

Not wedding dress....but my bridesmaid did this thinking she would lose the weight. She didn't. She looks kind of ridiculous in my pictures.

I would not do this. Having a dress taken in isn't as bad as having it taken out.

I actually bought a bigger size so that it could be tailored to me instead of me trying to tailor my body to a dress. I was much more comfortable in my wedding gown than I am in dresses on a daily basis because it was tailored to me. Do not count on yourself losing weight, especially if you need it in certain areas because we all know you can't just poke your side and the fat is gone. If we could then we'd all be hot skinny model types. Just pick a gown that makes you feel great in and then have it ordered for your body. Taking it in is MUCH easier than adding fabric.

I fit into a size lower sample but they told me it was stretched out and I should order a size up. Uh nope. I ordered the sample size and I was debating a size lower than that.

Anddd in the last month have gained a full size bc I am a lazy ass who eats too much sugar. Not too concerned about it bc Jan 2, 8 mos before wedding, I will be in the gym 5x/week and strict clean diet no sugar no gluten no dairy. I did this successfully in the past, as recently as 2013 with a 35lb weight loss in approx 5 mos. I slowly gained back like 10 since then plus a few more this past stressful month.

If anything, I'll have to be careful not to lose too much weight.

I should add that my fiancé is in the gym 6 days a week, eats incredibly clean, has a ton of supplements, one our GM's is a trainer etc. I really have all the necessary tools. And know I have no choice come Jan.

I ordered a size smaller because I had just started pole dancing 3 months prior and was dropping weight like crazy. When I went to pick up my gown, I tried it on and it was a perfect fit. When my aunt did my alterations 6 months before the wedding she had to take it in. I probably could have ordered it 2 sizes smaller, but I didn't want to take the risk of not losing the weight.

I also had a lace up back (sorry, can't think of what it's called, been a long day) not a zipper.

Please do not do this!! Unless you feel you will drop the weight. My friend got married at the beach Friday and was a hour late because she bought her dress small and it did not fit. We had to rig it up enough to get her married. She lost all the sunlight on the beach for rat pictures...I just wouldn't do it.
