Who can give you away

Leeanne, on April 3, 2018 at 2:18 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 23
Okay so I don't have my father around anymore so he can't be the one to give me away at my wedding...would it be okay if my son did it? He'll be 5 at the time or does it need to be someone older?

Can your mother give you away? In Vietnamese culture, it's the mother who gives the bride away. I'm having both of my parents give me away at our ceremony.

It can be anyone or no one. It's one of those "whatever you want" things!

No one "gives you away." It's not a rule that only certain people can "give you away" - your father isn't trading you for chickens and 40 acres.

Anyone (your son, your siblings, a friend) can escort you down the aisle. Or, if you prefer, you can walk alone or walk with your FH.

No one needs to give you away. You can walk down the aisle yourself I’m walking myself. I think it’s an old tradition and I’m choosing to marry and don’t need to be given away.

It would totally be ok if your son escorts you,, and it would be ok if you walked on your own. There's no rule here, choose whatever you're most comfortable with

My mom is walking me down the aisle (my mom was both parents and also like a best friend so I'm more offended when people suggest otherwise lol)

My FH has walked his sisters down the aisle because their Dad passed away.

    It's 100% up to you.

That would be totally fine, and pretty awesome, for your son to walk you down the aisle. My H and I walked down the aisle together.

I would love to have my father to walk me down the aisle, but he passed away last year. As the day approaches my heart aches. I wish he was here, but I'm thinking for my wedding on Saturday I'm going to ask my mom to walk me down the aisle.

Anyone can escort you down the aisle, male or female. I wouldn't call it giving you away since that tends to have more patriarchal, sexist undertones. You can also choose to walk down the aisle yourself. That's what I did.

This is completely up to you and your own personal preference. My brother is walking me down the aisle - even though both of my parents are alive and well. I think your son walking you down the aisle is an adorable idea!

Because he is a little younger I would walk by yourself to the altar and have him standing up there and then having him give you away.

I think it needs to be someone older. My best friend husband is accompanying down the aisle. Otherwise, I was going to go by myself. I'm thinking I will need an arm to hold to calm my nerves since I am a pretty big introvert and everyone will be looking at me.

I was in a wedding where the bride was given away by her son, who was 4 at the time. Her father and stepfather were present, but she felt her son was a better choice. The pictures were so cute!!!

I plan to have my son walk me down the isle he will be 7 or 8 at he time ( not sure if we r doing wedding 2019 or 2020 yet) I think it will be nice to have your son do it. He's the closest person in your life right now. He wouldn't be giving you away really but the two of you would be going together to start a new family.
