Who changed their name, how long was the process?

Mrs. M fka Sami B, on April 25, 2012 at 3:16 PM Posted in Married Life 0 21

I'm planning on taking FHs name, we aren't going on our honeymoon for 3 weeks, should I attempt to start the paperwork before the honeymoon or wait until afterwards? We are traveling abroad so I won't have time to change out the passport, but can I get everything started with Social Security Administration?

I changed stuff gradually. I went to SSA and DMV almost right away, but in your case make sure the passport matches your DL and the ticket. You can start SSA.

Then we did credit cards and bank accounts over time. Most banks require you showing up in person with a marriage certificate, but most credit cards can be changed online/over the phone.

I changed my name Smiley smile

I didn't change it until after we got back from our honeymoon and after we got our marriage license back...as they won't accept it without that piece of documentation Smiley smile

Make sure you go the the SS office first. It will take 24 hours for it to populate into the DMV system before you can go to the DMV to change your name.

It took me a full day to go to the SS office and all my banks and only took about 30min first thing when the DMV opened to change it there.

Keep in mind I have my own personal business I had to change things on as well...so mine might have taken a bit longer.

Make sure you bring your marriage license with you.

I've heard the mortgage is one of the more tedious to change. SS first, then pause til post honeymoon for DMV.

Do you just need your marriage certificate to change your name on credit cards and bank accounts?

    Just your marriage certificate.

I put all information and forms into a folder with my marriage license for easy reference and access when I went to each place.

MissNowMrs is very controversial...some like it some do not. I loved it b/c I only needed to input my information once and it populated into all the correct forms for me...then I just printed them out and took them with me to each place. Easy.

Thanks Mrs. S, I've squandered all of my vacation time on the wedding and honeymoon through at least September so I'd really like to tackle some of this when we get back from the wedding. Did you have to wait long for a copy of the marriage certificate?

Im with cydney - i usd MissNowMrs - and it was helpful.

for example it told me that the laws in CA are a little different, and how to make sure i did everything right. i still haven't done my passport but i have everything else done!

the bank was the most annoying for us, but we don't have any big assets so we didn't have to deal with a mortgage or cars or anything.

i told DH next time he has to change his instead Smiley smile

We just needed the certified certificate..

it only took a while for me because I couldn't find time from work to go down to the records dept to get my certified copy.. I wanted a couple copies just in case any places wanted to keep one (they didn't). I changed most of them on my lunch breaks at work, but it was a gradual process.. I would definitely wait until you get back from the honeymoon, just so everything matches the way it needs to and doesn't get complicated..

We got the copy in about 4-5 days. I'm in VA and honestly didn't find it too time consuming or difficult. So to me any paid service would have been a waste. The only places that required forms or waiting were SSA and DMV. But that was one form each.

The rest was just walking into the bank with a marriage certificate and calling credit card companies. Some folks require that you fax the certificate and others don't. But some of my accounts still have my maiden name, I just didn't get to them yet. No biggie :-)

And although I really like my married name, I am STILL finding it weird getting used to it!

I've started the process...I've changed it at work (and with my medical insurance) and with the bank and just needed a copy of the marriage license. Where I live (DC), you have to have a certified copy of your marriage license to change your name at social security (which is not the same as the regular marriage license the officiant signs). I'm gradually changing it with creditors, etc. and have only needed the marriage license. Next week I'll be going to motor vehicles, who knows how long that will take.

You don't change it on your mortgage, just notify them that you are married. The name on the deed stays the same and it's attached to your social security number, so you want to let them know so it matches, but you technically don't change it on the mortgage itself.

I'm not looking forward to this process, not really for me personally, but for me professionally!!

I am a CFO of a bunch of small businesses and my name is on EVERYTHING!! Every single bank account, everything single state document, all the tax forms, etc. Going to be such a PITA!!!

I've heard SSA is the most annoying so maybe start that, but be very careful since you're traveling Mrs. S is right, your DL needs to match your Passport which needs to match the tickets. I'm not doing anything until after the honeymoon

I'm not going on my Honeymoon until November so I plan on changing all my documents before the Honeymoon. I'll have 3-4 months in between. Plus I already booked my airline tickets, and everything in what will be my new married name.

Hmmmm good question, I was wondering the same thing. Not sure what I should do as I booked the tickets with my maiden name but when we go on the honeymoon my name will be changed. I have an email into the airlines as to what I should do? I'm thinking I should wait til after the honeymoon!

It took us 2 full weeks to get our marriage cert. back, then one day at the Social Ser. office, and 30min at the DMV. The bank was easy, as well as some household bills. My credit cards is another story.

Took us about 10 days to get the marriage license in the mail and we did everything in one day. Took a couple of weeks for me to get my social security card. I would hold off until after the honeymoon especially if you need to change your passport. Airlines are super picky about names matching on documents like that. I guess there's no reason why you can't fill out your paperwork for a new SS card right away though since that takes awhile.

II booked my tickets in my maiden name, and its 3 weeks after the wedding so I may leave it all be until post honeymoon. Looks like ssa could be changed but everything else I need to match.

It took us TWO MONTHS to get our marraige certificate!! It got lost in the mail TWICE (long story). Luckily I was already planning to wait until after our honeymoon which was 3 months after the wedding. I was concerned about starting the name change process before traveling abroad, but if your passport matches your ticket you should be fine.

Have not started this process yet but reading all these was helpful.

We got our marriage license in the mail the day we came home from the honeymoon so it took about a week. It was a wonderful thing to come home to Smiley smile

Gonna get started on name changing soon. Haven't had the energy. Since coming home from honeymoon, I got right back to work and the regular day to day stuff. Probably next week sometime, I'll start this process.

I went into a SS office and had that process done, left there and went to the DMV and got that done next, took 2 weeks for my new SS card to come in, had my license a couple weeks later as well.

We were married at the JOP though so we had our signed marriage certificate right away.
