Who changed their name, how long was the process?

I'm planning on taking FHs name, we aren't going on our honeymoon for 3 weeks, should I attempt to start the paperwork before the honeymoon or wait until afterwards? We are traveling abroad so I won't have time to change out the passport, but can I get everything started with Social Security...

EVERYTHING MUST MATCH AT ALL TIMES!!!!! Therefore if you do not plan on changing your passport before leaving then wait until you return before you do anything. Typically its a misdemeanor in some states to not carry proper id and some states and/or cities have time lines associated with the change. So it depends on where you live. In order for you to change with SSA you must update your id first. Therefore whenever you decide to do so, do it in this order and it will be less of a headache for you. 1. Obtain additional copies of your certified marriage certificate if needed to file upcoming applications. 2. State Id/license 3. If you can visit your local SSA office. They will provide you with a paper recepit of change that you can use until your new card arrives 3. complete a Passport Amendment/Validation Application. Send this along with correct fees, certified copy of a marriage certificate or court papers to the nearest passport agency. Then you are ready to go. Hope that helps.
