Who Had The Lamest Engagement!?

Alyssa, on September 12, 2011 at 3:47 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 80

So here it is! I love my FH to death but let be honest... our engagement was not a sweep me off my feet blockbuster movie engagement! lol I know I am not the only one who had a low key engagement! lets hear your stories ladies!

My FH and I were camping when he proposed, and although he has always been a hopeless romantic..(leaving rose peddles on the bed for our 3 years dating anniversary) I was expecting some sort of hot sexy romantic engagement... boy was I wrong! he grabbed a piece of the carpet from the ratty old carpet falling apart outside our RV and tied the ring to the A/C vent... I walked by it twice before I even noticed it... I was caught of gaurd alright!

I get to tell this one, because I was the one who made the lame proposal!

On August 3, 2008, I decided to propose to NotFroofy. You know those stories about the romantic proposals at the couple's favorite restaurant, or in a scenic outdoor spot, where the man gets down on one knee and presents the woman with a ring? Those weren't me. For one thing, in most proposals, the man knows the woman will say yes before he even asks. For us, even the possibility of our being able to get married was so new that we really hadn't discussed it. I already knew that NotFroofy wanted to be with me for the rest of our lives. But with the legal murkiness surrounding same-sex marriage, I wasn't sure whether NotFroofy would think it a good idea. And I didn't want her to think that she had to marry me in order to stay with me.

I therefore spent much of the day trying to get up the nerve even to ask. My tension was so obvious that NotFroofy kept asking me what was wrong, sure that I was mad at her about something. Finally, I sat down next to her on the day bed in her study, and blurted out something really suave like, "Umm, so what would you think of the idea of getting married." Fortunately, she said yes!

At that point, we discovered the first of the wedding traditions that would require adaptation: who, if anyone, got the engagement ring. However, it turned out that neither one of us really wanted one, so we never got one.

@2d Bride- I'm so glad I'm not the only one here that doesn't mind not having a ring! FH and I have known each other 9 years, since middle school, and we also knew early on we'd want to be in each others lives. In this economy I wasn't looking for him to pull $1500 or whatnot out of his a$$ to get me ring-I felt the ones we would wear the day we get married were so much more important! I know the engagement is such a traditional part of getting married, but because we both knew we wanted to spend the rest of our lives with each other, I didn't need a ring to prove it! Smiley smile

I got mine after an argument, we were coming from a church banquet, got to his house to pick up my car, I apologize 'cause I was wrong. Then we started talking and it was more like an agreement between the two of us, we've discussed marriage many times before, so it was no surprise but he just sorta told me that we need to get married in 2 years. I was staring at him, and asking are you proposing. He answered yes and I said yes sure. Then right then and there we both decided that we'd get married december 2011 and here we are.

It was personal and intimate, I wouldn't change it either, loved it. And the best part to me was the fact that we both agreed to it and talked about it from time to time so he knew for sure there wouldn't be any dissapointment...

Ian said previously that he had wanted to be with me for the rest of our lives and had given me a promise ring to show me his commitment to us. A week later we are laying in bed (ahem) lol and he says "Do you see us rocking together on a porch being gray haired together?" I answered that I sure hoped so because I loved him and then he asked me! I was of course Yes! but really, in my birthday suit in bed. Like Dita though I wouldn't change it for the world. We just change it for the kids and family lol.

I loved how FH proposed to me, BUT I can tell you about how my dad proposed to my mom-

My dad is the LEAST romantic person in the entire universe. For real. And apparently he and my mom had been dating for 3 months when an ex of hers came to town, so she hung out with him. My dad got jealous and threw a fit while they were driving around and my mom said something like "well why do you even care, it's not like we're married" and my dad said "well fine, do you want to get married?" And here they are, 30 years later, helping me plan my wedding.

My soon to be MIL had ordered the rings almost a year prior to us actually getting engaged, but shortly after his brother bought his fw a 1200 ring, which is more then we spent on our entire set, james didn't want to be all embarrassed and I flat out told him that if he asked me to marry him I didn't care about the cost of my ring. That I loved him and wanted to be with him forever. lol new years day he got off work at 1 am walked into the room and said so how about we get married. lol it was perfect but definitely not all movie scene engagement lol

Um, did you mean lamest proposal? And is there a cash prize, by any chance?

Here's mine: Uh, I didn't get proposed to.

Well, unless you count me saying, "Does this mean we're engaged?" And him saying, "I don't know. I guess so." a proposal. And that followed me forcing him to pick a date for our civil ceremony. Don't get me wrong either; I love him, he's a good husband (most of the time), who has really stepped it up in the last year... but I'm not gonna lie, he didn't come that way.

    I'm happy though... now... mostly.

Ok, I still bring it up sometimes and he get mad.

I'm ok with that. Smiley smile

Mine was horrible! We had gotten in a small argument that afternoon about him potentially taking a job in Virgina. I was headed to work and did not want to talk about it all. By the time I got home that night after work around 11PM, he was on the couch telling me about a job offer in IRAQ as a government contractor. The convo ended with him stating this is a great opportunity and how he'd want me to be there and even if he takes the job (which he did) he would always be here for me and that he wanted to make me his wife...The next day he called my dad and talked to him about it and he picked out my ring....SO LAME and he knows it...but he's made up for it a long the waySmiley smile

Our original engagement was done at a random Gas Station in Las Vegas...LOL!!! In my car. I kind of prompted the whole thing too...with the whole "Well aren't you going to ask me something?"

Its ok though...he RE proposed to me this past Christmas...woke me up Christmas morning. Made me breakfast in bed...little did I realize he had our web cam on broadcasting to our family...I was half asleep and didn't notice it sitting on our dresser.

That was so funny that it was in plain sight!! Our engagement story is embarrassing but quite funny! He proposed on Christmas eve. We had dinner at my family's house (i'm talking aunts, uncles, grandparents, the whole thing) and the entire time we were there he had gas something terrible!!

So later, we went to his Mom's house where it was his parents and brothers. He was standing in the living room & he had this look on his face so I walk over unawares & asked "what did you fart again?" He laughed and said "no" & pulled the ring box from behind his back & asked "Will you marry me?" Of course I said Yes!!! But it was soooo funny and his whole family still joke about it today!

Ours was pretty random and spur of the moment. We went out for lunch and a drink on St. Patrick's Day and while we were sharing an appetizer and he said to me, "Let's go get married." I said ok, but we couldn't find anywhere that could do it right then because we didn't have a marriage license yet. So we just went to a local jewelry store and picked out a sapphire and diamond ring so I'd have something to wear. When we got home he took it from me and got down on his knee and officially asked me. He told me he'd been thinking about it for a while and had wanted to do it in a hot air balloon, but when we were sitting there at lunch he just couldn't stop staring at me and thinking about it. About a week later we went back to the jewelry store and picked out a gorgeous ring.

Mine was not how I had expected or dreamt of at all..

we were in a random fish and chip restaurant that smelt like feet ( malt vinegar) with our two kids fidgeting and causing a scene. He said and I quote " ahhh so if you want...we can get married...what do you think?"

Our story is cute, but not elaborate - but I loved the way he proposed Smiley smile

We were getting ready to go to a friends birthday dinner party and my FH kept watching me and I thought he was acting really strange. I was doing my hair and he was just standing in the doorway of the bathroom with this strange smile on his face. So finially, I was ready to go and I walked into our living room and he was sitting on the couch. He asked me to sit down becasue he had to talk to me about something important. Before I knew it, he was down on one knee proposing to me! I was SHOCKED! I mean, we've been together for nearly 10 years, so I knew it was coming eventually, but I had no idea!! He had been carying around the ring for a month just waiting for the right time and he said that that morning just felt like the right time Smiley smile

Afterwards he took me to get a manicure!

I love the stories ladies. Great reading!

We got engaged in the bathroom. We had gone to see the movie, "The BUcket List" that day. During the night, I can always be counted on to get up to use the bathroom at least once. Well, apparently I wasn't waking soon enough for him, so he woke me. I got out of bed, walked around the four poster, farted, cussed and walked down the hallway, probably scratching my butt the entire way. I saw dim lights and "stuff" on the sink, but I didn't have my glasses. So, being half asleep I said, "What the F is that? Where the F are my glasses?" I walked around my bedroom in the dark, stumbling and cussing, found my glasses, walked down the hall, lprobbly scratching my butt and saw it: A light up "I love you Teddy Bear", my ring and a piece of paper taped to the mirror that read..."Let's cross something off of our bucket list." I turned around and he was on one knee in the hall. I still had to use the bathroom. I didn't answer him until I went
