Who's Officiating Your Wedding?

Lisa, on January 17, 2023 at 1:47 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 28
Are you hiring an officiant? Asking a family member or friend to officiate? A legal official at the courthouse? Or having a church official perform the ceremony? How did you decide who to choose for this role?

We're still early in planning so we don't know for sure yet - but my FH thought one of my uncles mentioned being ordained so we want to ask him! My uncle is hilarious and we're planning an intimate less than 30 people wedding so I just think it would be so fun and special if he would do it!

Your uncle sounds like a great choice for an officiant! I love it when the officiant adds a bit of humor into the ceremony, and I'm sure it would mean a lot to him to get to officiate!

By complete coincidence, my husband and I are both Catholic. When we figured that out, we sat down together and picked out a church to attend (we were in school and not from the area). We both really liked one of the priests, so when we started looking into what date we'd pick, our first consideration was what date he'd be available in October. He just so happened to be a monsignor too, so my grandma was thrilled lol.

So, I'm not mentioning this to most people I know IRL since it provokes strong responses, but we will actually be married by my FH's divorce attorney. He is a good friend of FH's and has come to be my friend as well. FH had an awful, ugly divorce that dragged on for years and I got to know the atty well through trial prep, talking FH off of ledges, etc. We privately like the symmetry of the atty helping FH gain his freedom so he could marry me. (FYI - FH and his ex were separated well before he and I met in case anyone thinks I was a factor in him getting divorced)

Sounds like the priest you chose is a really good fit for your wedding! That is so meaningful to have the priest officiate who you both like best and who has watched your relationship grow from the beginning.

I think that sounds like a really good person to officiate your wedding! That seems so poetic that he helped him gain his freedom from his previous marriage, and now will help him marry the love of his life. Ignore any negative opinions about this from people in your life - I don't think there's anything wrong with your choice at all!

Your bishop sounds like a perfect choice of officiant for you! Best of all worlds: your religious leader, close friend, and someone who knows both you and your fiance.

My husband and I chose one of his friends to be our officiant. We both wanted to choose someone we already knew, and someone who would feel comfortable performing the ceremony in front of people. He's someone who is very outgoing and good at public speaking, and a friend who we've been close to for years. We wanted to honor him in some way at our wedding, and decided to ask him to officiate. He did a really great job as our officiant!

We're having my dad's best friend officiate our wedding- he's the equivalent of my godfather really just without the title. He's known me since I was just starting to walk and met my fiancé when my younger sister got married. We're so excited!! He's doing a GREAT job and even went and got officiated even though we did the paperwork recently since its a destination wedding.

My brother is officiating our wedding. We are not particularly religious and it felt wrong to pick a random justice of the peace. We are not having a wedding party so this was a great way to include him in a different way.

How cool!! He seems like a good person to officiate, especially since he's known you your whole life and is close to your family. And it sounds like he's just as excited about officiating!

That is a really cool way for you to include him! Has your brother ever officiated a wedding before? Or will this be his first one?

This will be his first time. Although he just got married 6 months ago and had his wife's uncle officiate (another first timer) so he's familiar with the process at least

That's awesome! And even better that he has another close family member as a resource for if he has any questions about the process.

We had my cousin who is a pastor and close family member. We have a good relationship with her and her family. We have a good time when we are together. She was a good pick for us because she is a good person, easy to get along with and funny

She sounds like a wonderful person to officiate your wedding! I always love when a couple and/or officiant adds a bit of humor into the ceremony. It keeps it lighthearted, and makes it memorable for the guests attending the wedding.

Very cool! That takes the stress off you of having to find an officiant. Hopefully you get to meet this person in advance to discuss what you envision for the ceremony?
