Why are chargers so expensive?

Has anyone been able to find some decently priced (under $1.50 each) plate chargers? I've tried Amazon, eBay, Craigslist, Ali express and all the major store and still nothing! My wallet is crying at the thought of dropping $400 on pre-plates.

Try dollar general's website- when you see them you have to order them ASAP because they will sell out. I ended up getting mine from Michaels when they had a BOGO free sale a few months ago. I also had a coupon so they came out to about $0.75 each.

They are expensive because someone named them "chargers" rather than "big shiny plate thingies". We decided on renting color table topper linen to go on the ivory linen, rather than get chargers. It ended up costing half as much because we only needed about 14 of them.

I love them but they are a frivolous expense that I simply can't justify. Sigh.

    UPDATE:

It seems the Charger Gods have smiled down upon us today, ladies. Michaels is having a sale right now and a bunch of their chargers are $0.99. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.

We bought ours Christmas clearance too. We did chargers just for the head table though! It add a touch of it but not too expensive.

I feel so dumb, but, I won't know if I don't ask: if they are just bigger plates you don't eat off of, does that make them essentially just a table decoration? And then what happens when the food comes out? Does the wait staff pick them up and then that's it?

Chargers instead of linens? You're not having table linen?

I Love the way chargers look- we can rent the solid silver metal ones for about 90$.

I'm sorely tempted to do it- I just think they truly pull the table together- but it's literally a 100$ of wasted money JUST for a look.

    But I WANT THEM!!!.

It may be one of those "fuck it do it" things. they just make me happy. But I"m still looking for some on the cheap- I have 30 plates. I feel like I should be able to buy for under 90.
