Why are flowers so expensive!

Courtney, on November 7, 2013 at 11:30 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 29

I need help with flowers!! I have 8 bridesmaids, 8 groomsmen, and of course need a bouquet for myself! I am not opposed to silk flowers, but I do not want to do feathers or pinwheels or anything like that...Anybody know any reasonably priced florists in the Baltimore area?? I am trying to ideally spend maybe 30$ a bouquet for each girl...Hopefully less!! I am not opposed to small bouquets or pretty much anything!!

Our wedding is in fall 2014 and colors will be navy and coral, any advice is much appreciated!!

Hi! Sept bride here with navy, coral, and gray as colors. I am either going to buy flowers from Costco/Bjs and make my own or I am going to buy sola flowers from save-on-crafts and make them that way!

Costco has some great deals as I learned the other day. Also, I found this awesome website: globalrose.com where you can buy flowers in bulk or arranged as needed.

Buy normal bouquets and tie a ribbon on them. 30$ a bouquet isn't going to work otherwise.

I was quoted 175 for mine. I made my own. Made 15 centerpieces, 3 bouquets. Like 8 bouts and 4 table arrangements and 2 arrangements for our cupola for 500$

And 160 of that was on orchids I just had to have as fillers because I loved them.

Yay Sam's! I got a 24 piece corsage/boutinierre set there for an excellent price.

I'll admit, I splurged on my bouquet. Or rather, my FMIL did as her gift to me. Smiley smile

Thanks everyone! I have heard great things about costco flowers! I mainly only need flowers for the bridesmaids as we are using minimal flowers for centerpieces by using wine bottles as vases... We are trying to keep our flower budget under 300$

My bouquet is $95. The BM's are $45. These are real flowers that will be "in season" and that was the key I think.

I have heard that Costco has some really good deals.

Do you know anyone in the restaurant-world or anyone who owns a business? If so, Sieck's in Baltmore (311 East Chase Street, 21202,

www.sieck.com) is a great place! They just don't sell to individuals. I have a friend with a business (and who already had an account there) and I am getting my flowers at an incredible bargain and putting everythign together myself with the help of Mom, MIL and BMs. I was also able to buy my centerpiece containers and ribbon there for much less than anywhere else, except maybe the Dollar store, whcih I didn't even think to look at. Sigh, too late now. Smiley smile Good luck!

To cut costs I decided to have all baby's breath bouquets for the girls. I love them, but trust me, it was a financial decision.

Having a florist was important. There is no way I'm doing my own bouquets and such so I had to find a cost-effective way to do it.

If you are not opposed to fake flowers check this shop out. The owner Yanni is awesome! I love my bouquet she made for me. (pic attached)

ETA: $68 is the price of the bridal bouquet, she does smaller ones for the BMs which I believe where $34 each

I would suggest making your own with flowers from costco or Sam's club. My MOH bought 200 roses for her own wedding and made everything herself. It only cost around 100 bucks, and it was a fun thing to do together. She just got ribbon and pearl pins from the craft store.

I ordered mine from Sams club and they were amazing. We got all of our bouts, corsages and bouquets for around $380. They were already assembled, and more amazing than I ever could have imagined. No one believed we didn't get them from a florist. To be honest, I loved them more than anything I saw from a florist. We had 5 bouquets, 4 corsages and 8 bouts.

I got the idea from MrsStobe and ordered the flowers from Yanni as well Smiley smile SUPER pumped. My colors are navy and coral! Yanni has been in touch with me lots of times, making sure the colors of coral and navy are right, making sure the styles are up to my standards, and I specified that I wanted a focus on lillies, and that is going to be the main "flower" in my bouquet.

For 6 BM bouquets, a toss bouquet, my bridal bouquet, and 15 boutonnieres (with shipping), it is going to come to $460. Yeah... TOTALLY doable considering what flowers cost these days.

I definitely would have used somewhere like Costco, except that all their packages had one bridal bouquet and multiple bridesmaids' bouquets--and we needed the opposite. Plus we arrived at our ceremony location only the day before, and many of these places tell you that you have to let the flowers rest for a couple of days before using them.

As with many wedding products, one issue is that florists assume you want "magazine perfect" flowers, as that article put it. And while I'd love to have that, if I had an infinite budget, an infinite budget is not my reality. I'd rather spend the money on things like paying for accommodations for all our guests (which we did, and which came to under $1,000) than paying for flowers.

I second (third? fourth?) the costco rec, but go for bulk flowers instead of the sets. We discovered at my friend's wedding that it is NOT hard to make your own! She got large daisies from Costco, and then we just wrapped the stems with ribbon and hot-glued it. (Plus the daisy stems came in little plastic tubes because they're very breakable, so we just taped the lot together, wound the ribbon to cover the plastic and BOOM! Bouquet!) Totally cute, and 6-7 stems is more than enough for a bridesmaid bouquet. It also made a fun bonding activity for the bridesmaids the night before.

Of course, I hate the smell of flowers, so I don't get to use this knowledge myself... Instead, I'm giving each person an embroidered handkerchief to hold.

This was the cheapest florist I found in the Baltimore area http://scentsationalflorals.com/, and they actually include prices on their website.

Bulk flowers from Costco or Sam's would also be a good call, and very inexpensive.

You might also want to think about making them yourself. I'm doing a "Flower Party" with all my bridesmaids and a couple people that are helping me plan, we're all going to make the bouquets & boutonnieres as well. I found a website for silk flowers in bulk you might want to check it out. I'm getting mine from here and you can always go to Michaels for ribbon & the pins for the stems.

I used silk flowers from Hobby Lobby. I bought the bunches of roses, it came with 13 roses per bunch for $7.99. I clipped the flowers off where it connected to the main stem and gathered the little stems together, arranging the heads nicely, and wrapped the stems with floral wire before wrapping it with ribbon. I made four bouquets and have the flowers i need to do the pew bouquets (100 flowers total) for $40, and i paid $18 total for all seven boutonnieres and four corsages. They arent realtouch, but they look great. Realtouch would have cost significantly more.
