Why do people ask if I'm starting to get excited?

TripleM, on December 9, 2017 at 11:43 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 6

Listen, people. My wedding is in one week.

ONE WEEK. Why do people ask me if I'm starting to get excited? Um, of course??? I am marrying the most wonderful man I've ever met. I am a sarcastic person by nature, and it's taking everything in me to not answer that question with "eh, I mean, i guess it's too late to elope now." Im sure they mean well, but "wow, the wedding is almost here, how exciting!" would be better than "Are you starting to get excited?" Also, it's past time to ask how the planning is going. It's done. It's planned. There are things to do, but that is just executing the already made plans. If we hadn't gotten our stuff together in the last 15 months, it ain't happening now. I have been a pretty calm and laid back bride up til now, but with one week to go, I'm bordering on bonkers. Please tell me I'm not the only one done with dumb questions?

Because it's normal to get even more excited the closer the date?

The planning is done and now you can relax and enjoy like everyone else.

I got a lot of “Are you getting nervous yet?” I think people may just be trying to make conversation. I feel that it’s a pretty common question. Maybe just answer with “Of course I am” & let it go.

I think people are asking that because they assume that after all the planning and anticipation the fact that it’s finally here would make you super excited all over again.

I know I am way more excited than I was three months ago for that reason. But I’m also a sarcastic ass too so when people ask me that I just say “meh, I guess” and then burst out giggling because I am really fucking excited.

I agree with PP.. I think it's because they may not have something specific to mention about the wedding itself, but they want to make conversation with you about an exciting event in your life. I've honestly had the same immediate response a few times (Are you excited?), but it's important to take a step back and realize the heart behind the comment.

Yeah, I know it comes from a good place. They all mean well. At least, people close to me. When it's a random coworker I've only ever seen or spoken to twice, and they ask, it's like, do you really want to hear all my gushing right now?? I don't even know you. I hate small talk (if we are on the phone 2 time zones away, I don't care about your weather and you don't care about mine). I have to small talk constantly for my job, and I think it feels like my wedding is getting pushed into small talk territory.

I don’t think it’s a dumb question and I think you’re being dramatic. People are literally just trying to be nice and have a conversation with you. I talked to so many people I hardly knew about it. You’re wedding is obviously not equivalent to weather small talk.
