Why do people take so long to Rsvp?

Elizabeth , on October 2, 2019 at 12:34 PM Posted in Planning 8 22
My invitations went out two weeks ago and the RSVP deadline is next week. 2/3 of the people invited haven’t responded. I’ve always responded immediately to wedding invitations, so I wasn’t expecting this many people not to - should I expect them all just to do it at the last minute, or should I prepare to have to call them all?

You will probably have to call a good amount of them. 3 weeks isn’t very long to allow your guests to RSVP.

It's just typical for people not to RSVP, there are a ton of forum posts about it from a ton of brides. We sent our invites out 3 months early, guests had the invites for 6 weeks before they were due, and we included stamped & addressed RSVP cards in each envelope and a way to RSVP online. We also sent save the dates out 10 months in advance with information on our main hotel block & our website fully set up. We literally could not have made it easier if we tried, and we still had to contact 61 people after our RSVP date came. It's just how it is unfortunately! I for sure learned my lesson & send RSVPs back almost instantly when we get them for events. I wouldn't reach out until a day after your RSVP date.

I would definitely call them and follow up. That time frame seems a bit short to expect anyone to get back to you so soon. But in general, people are pretty bad at responding anyway.

My dad was of the opinion that if people aren't coming, then they don't send anything back.
    People just suck at RSVPs.

Many people view the deadline as the day to put it in the mail. We got a whole bunch a few days after our due date.

I’m experiencing the same thing! We have about a third of ours back, and most of the people who haven’t responded are family! They are due by next Thursday, so my mom is teaching out to people this week to remind them.

If there's anything wedding planning will teach you it's that people are awful about RSVPing. They either forget, think they don't need to RSVP if they're not coming, or on the other end, assume you know they'll be there so they don't RSVP.

I have so many that I think are the latter - almost none of the bridesmaids or groomsmen have RSVP’d!

I hate this!! Yeah, they make an assumption that you know they are coming. But, when you are a bride and/or groom, and planning a whole wedding, there are lots of other things on your mind, so it's really best if they would just send back the dang card!!

Even though I'm still months away from sending my invitations, whenever I see or talk to someone in my family, I've started reminding them, "this is going to be old school, with old school RSVP cards. Be sure to send yours back, even though you've told me you're coming." I'm really hoping this "preemptive strike" will mean I have less people to hound come RSVP time. Fingers crossed!

I didn’t even go old school! They have an online option that takes under a minute!

I get you!! But I figured an online option is even easier to ignore!! Plus, many of my guests are older, and although they have computers and smart phones, they are even less likely to RSVP online, so I knew the cards were essential for my guest list.

I got a bunch of RSVPs at the very tail end of our deadline, but I'm still going to have people left to call. Our RSVP date was yesterday. I'm waiting until Friday to start contacting the ones left....hoping there's a few stragglers in the mail.

Prepare to call them all but also be prepared to send messages "We will need to have your RSVP by x date otherwise we will need to mark you as not attending" because people may ignore you.

Invitations are to be sent out 6-8 weeks prior to a Wedding.

This gives people time to receive them, check their schedules (social and work), and make or budget for travel and 🏨 plans.

I had a ton of people not RSVP... and included stamps on the return cards and put address stickers on them all. It was easy as check yes or no and I had to hunt people down.

My due date was yesterday and I'm still missing 39 of 94. I gave myself a buffer for this reason exactly but this weekend Ill be sending a list of people to contact to my mom (shes retired, bored, and constantly complaining I don't ask for her help enough) The sad reality is, sometimes people don't understand the stress it causes, and even I've bee guilty of it in the past.
