I don't think there's a history, it's just a decorating trend. Some people use them for their card holders.

I don't know if there is a "history" to it but I could be wrong. I just know it's a cute way to collect cards from people - I plan on using one particularly because our theme involves love birds, so it's appropriate. It's like the wishing well that people make for people to drop their cards in. Just something different than a regular box.

I'm getting an old fashion mail box, the kind that mounts to the side of a house, gonna but Mr & Mrs FH last name on the front somehow =). I definetly didn't understand the birdcage.

I am using it for the cards that my guests may bring. You can also use it for decoration, like place three different height candles in there. I think that would look very pretty.

I thing the bird cage has a better look than just a box sitting on a table

It's to keep the cards from flying away.

It's to remind your groom that he's trapped with you forever. FOR-EV-VER. ;-) Real answer: I think it's just a trend, like butterflies.

I'm using a bird cage because it was free (hand-me-down) and I'm too DIY challenged to make a box.

I just think they are pretty. It's not like the kind you get from the pet store, they are usually decorative. If you wanted to find "meaning" I suppose you could say it is associated with "love birds", or at least that's one point of view.. but really, they're pretty.

It might be from the bird cakes. They would build the cake around a bird cage and then at the cake cutting they release the doves. I THINK it might be an italian tradtion that use to be really popular. I saw it on a episode of cake boss Smiley laugh

I thought it looked kinda cool but I would feel bad for the birdies. Plus birds smell! I dont want my cake smelling like..well you know

If it is an open box, and sticky fingers can get in there. A bird cage makes it a little harder to steal the envelopes.

Please have someone guard the gift table. Don't have the gift table Right next to the exit, too easy for someone to slip in and slip out. Maybe at a table near the head table? off to the side? Remove the card box before dinner. Lock it in the brides room or in the trunk of a car.

Read up on someone that had their money stolen

Thanks for the advice, Hayley. I would never have thought about keeping gifts from sticky fingers, but (especially with large weddings), randos can slip in & out in an instant.

I wonder if it has anything to do with building a "nest"?
