Why I Think Weddings Are Totally Stupid

I agree with her main point, which is to have the wedding you can afford. I did find her premature baby example a bit draconian.

If they didn't conceive right away, they would have had time and more money saved up.

Just saying...

I think how we do weddings are stupid. It's a huge finical burden I never understood why the young people starting their life out together paid for it all, and the guests come with a gift (if they want). I understand parents are supposed to pay but most don't. Starting your life out in debt always seemed dumb to me but at the same time I understand wanting a big celebration to start out your life. Eh.. it is what it is.

I think she is in a "Oh pity me" sort of state. I certainly don't like her writing. I think all of us on here are doing weddings we can afford. Nick and I certainly are NOT wasting a down payment on a house for a wedding.

She really doesn't make any points or reasons, just keeps stating the same thing over and over again.

She could have told us how to help save for a weddings, how to plan a budget wedding, instead she just keeps saying essentially that it's a stupid investment.

I guess what gets me is she assumes everyone can't afford a 26,000 wedding without going into debt.

Well yeah it's dumb to spend money you don't have on ANYTHING. I agree that just spending $26k b/c you think you have to doesn't guarantee you a great day. And of course a wedding is not an investment. What idiot thinks a wedding is actually an "investment?" And yes, medical problems can happen anytime and it's important to have savings in case something happens, god forbid. But....duh? Life 101? IDK.

Seems like looking back, she thinks that SHE spent money she couldn't afford on a party where she had no fun, and is now just bitter and regretful b/c it bit her in the butt. And also all she thinks of when she looks at her wedding pictures is how naive she was about marriage and how her bubbies are hanging out of her dress. Sucks for her.

Hate it. It's not an investment, but it's certainly not stupid. We spend money on things all the time that are expensive non investments, from coffee lattes to new cars. It's really not up to anyone else to tell us it's stupid.

The one thing I think we could all agree on is that when you spend money on a party you can afford, it's just a better situation, whether it's 2000.00 or 20,000.....

The one point I agree with her on is that the amount of money you spend isnot directly related to the quality of the wedding (meaning how great of a day it is, of course you get higher quality THINGS with more $$&dollarSmiley winking. I am spending 10K and yeah, it was a bit above my means but the FH and I have done it and will be making our final payment on Monday without using any credit. The point though is that here in Denver, 10K really will not get you much, maybe a backyard wedding. But, in Vegas, you really can get more of what you want for a lot less. Probably because its wedding capital USA, even if 75% of the weddings are drunken ones! Lol.

Either way, I think a lot of women feel that they have to spend large amounts of money to get their perfect day and thats the only way to do it, but I really dont think thats true. And I THINK thats what the writer was TRYING to say, but her snarkyness and bitterness came off a little too strong. lol!

Beat me too it Celia. New car purchases are stupid. $50K for a car...3yrs later you have a car thats worth $25K and owe $30K. We all know it's a party that we want to throw. Throw a party you can afford...and remember to have fun at it.

"And some of them didn't cost nothin'." First off, basic Junior High English states to never start a sentence with "and." Next, did it cost her quite a bit? I assume it cost her something given the double negative.

Nobody really wants to emulate Courtney Love, so just shut up since you couldn't come up with a better example of a "cool" smoker.

This woman only made one point through the entire (oh goodness I hesitate to use the word) article. She was stupid enough to give into the hype that an acceptable wedding costs no less than $20,000 when done on the "cheap." I could not believe this woman is a Staff Writer. Well, that is until I saw what magazines she is a Staff Writer for.

Its a racket... Exploiting female psychological wants. Look no further for proof than the wedding photographer or the venue. Ask why the photographer charges triple for a wedding? Ask the venue why you could rent it out for a week at one price but for the same price you get a half day due to it being for a wedding??? Its a racket. To each his own i suppose. Lets keep in mind as well 76 percent divorce rate in the united states. After applying some simple market principals looks like a pretty worthless ROI. Hey guys, is this the line I stand in to lose half of my belongings?
