Why is the Chicken Dance such a faux pas at weddings now?

Partly Cloudy, on August 24, 2011 at 10:33 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 21

In all seriousness I cannot wait to have the chicken dance played at my wedding! I just attended my cousin's wedding in July. My Dad requested the chicken dance because he knew that it would get my 85 year old Grandmother up and dancing. Sure enough my Grandma got up and wiggled her butt!

I also want to have the other cheesy line dance songs: Cupid Shuffle, Cha Cha slide, Electric Slide and a Conga Line!

I am curious to hear other people's opinions on why they don't want these songs played at their weddings. I would also like to hear why people want them. For me it is all about seeing my friends and family out on the dance floor whooping it up and having a good time.

I will be having the awful cheesy songs at my wedding. Everyone knows them, you don't have to be a good dancer to get your groove on, and the kids and elderly can get up and dance to a song. Mind you, I'll only have a few and at the beginning of dancing portion of the reception when the kids and the elderly will still be awake.

I think it's personal preference... I think the group dances can be fun, the songs just annoy me. We did NOT do the Chicken Dance or the Electric Slide at my wedding. However, we did do the Cupid Shuffle because I love that song... lol!!

The best group dance we had was "Beat It" by Michael Jackson... a lot of my friends also go to my church/campus ministry, and somehow over the years most of us have learned the dance to "Beat It" (we have some good dancers in our group!!). I of course put this song on my DJ's "must play" list... Our wedding planner was so shocked that we all knew the dance, she took a video and tweeted it immediately as the "best dancing at any wedding she has done!!"

...all that with no alcohol... lol Smiley smile

(picture is me and some of my crazy dancing guests!! this was the "Jump On It" song, haha)

Funny you mentioned this.. I refuse to play this song! My DJ even joked and hates it too! I don't know why? It was cool when I was a kid, not so much now. Then again, we are not having kids at the wedding.

I am all over the Cha Cha Slide, and thats another cheesy dance, but I love it! lol

@Robin - That is awesome. I hadn't thought of the "Jump on It" song. I will have to add that to my list!

I told the DJ that the Macerena (sp?) was a no, unless lots of people were requesting it. Which I guess people did, as I got suckered into dancing (hate that song, truly, I do!) I said yes to the chicken dance because we did have alot of younger kids there, and they had a blast doing it, especially my niece, she practised at home Smiley smile

We won't be having the Chicken Dance, Bunny Hop, Macarena, Electric Slide, etc just because both me and FH hate the songs and honestly I've never been a fan of the dances either. Instead we're having our dance start off with some traditional waltzed and polkas for the older crowd. We live in an area with a lot of German and Norwegian descendants and a wedding dance without the waltzes and polkas would be unheard of lol.

I'm not sure if i'll have the Chicken dance, but i'll definitely have those other songs for sure! I love to dance, and anything to get people up to join me and have a good time I will do! It's worked at every other wedding and party!

I want the Macarena, Cha Cha slide, Electric slide and YMCA but I'm not having the chicken dance. In general I like "mass" danced, but the chicken dance just isn't my style...

Being completely serious here.....the chicken dance or the birdie dance was written by a polka band named "The Emeralds".......the drummer is my cousin LOL.

Originally I wasn't going to do the silly dances because you read on the boards how so many people dislike them. I changed my mind because I LOVE all the cheesy wedding stuff! I am so glad I did because the dance floor was ROCKING each time we played a silly song. Granted, we didn't do all of them but we had a few and some of the best pictures of the reception are people doing The Chicken Dance.

If you love it and you know your guests will too, don't worry about what other people like!

I feel like whenever the chicken dance is done at a wedding, I feel like I'm at a little kids birthday party rather than at a classy wedding. I just think there are group numbers you can do (cha cha slide, cupid, etc) that are better options

I hadn't even thought of the cheesy dances but I think we need them! It's all about bringing back memories when you were younger and they are simple dances that everyone can participate in, even if u have 2 (or 3 or 4) left feet lol
