Why so much hate for the line dances?

I was reading another thread about what songs were on peoples "do not play list" and I was surprised how many people said they were banning all the line dance songs, ie, The Cha Cha Slide, Electric Slide, Cupid Shuffle, etc. Why are there so many haters for the line dances? My fiance and I are...

My fiance and I are actually excited about these songs. Of course we are old so maybe we are out of the loop. They always seem to get lots of people on the dance floor and we want everyone at our wedding to dance and have a good time.

I don't mind them! I think they are fun. They are super commonly played in bars & night clubs (at least where we are) and I think it's a good opportunity for people to dance that don't normally dance.

Only doing my favorite...The Electric Slide!

I personally don't care what the guests think about line dances. I love doing that song! Plus, my groom has agreed to dance with me. He doesn't dance so he's doing the First dance and the Electric Slide. I can teach him and it'll be easy way for him to participate on the dance floor in some way.

I liked them in elementary school, now I simply don't like them. They're entirely way too repetitive. Where we are from we go actual line dancing to country music! We are going to include some of those songs/dances. Th wobble is definitely a no for me (even though FH loves it, we'll see). Cotton eye joe is absolutely terrible. Maybe the Macarena would be nice or YMCA.

I have some personal feelings about choreographed dances. My mom, step-dad, MOH/sister, and my sister's husband are all country western line dance teachers and dance choreographers. They travel around the country to professionally teach at different workshops, event weekends, and resort getaways. They're like legit celebrities in some circles. I have always found it just weird and have not liked the family pressure to participate that it has brought periodically throughout my life. Sure, I could line dance if I wanted to, but I don't really think dancing should have a bunch of rules and no touching, that just doesn't really do it for me.

My mom and sister were discussing the reception recently, and I told them that traditional country western line dances, as well as the more well known "line" dances like Cupid Shuffle, would flat out NOT be allowed at the wedding (FH spontaneously did a fist pump). The only exception may be for The Macarena, and I'm on the fence about that. In reality, I don't know if I'll actually prohibit people from line dancing, but I mean, the latter part of the reception will probably sound more like a London nightclub than a rural country bar, so good luck line dancing to that even if you try.

Totally agree! FH originally didn't want any but I put my foot down and said they are a must lol the best time I have ever had at a wedding was when they played a bunch of line dance songs one after another and this family was showing everyone the dance moves to each one. seriously every guest was on the dance floor all night! No one wanted to leave! I was trying to get my parents to remember that night so I could figure out who that family was to invite them to my wedding lol unfortunetly no luck

I have a love/hate relationship with them, I suppose. They honestly feel like a bit of a clutch for DJs on a dance floor, and if one of them comes on, the first thing I think is "oh I guess the DJ was having a hard time getting people to dance" Also, they do get kinda old. But on the other hand, the fact that they do get people on the dance floor makes them fun! FH and I plan on telling our DJ to be conservative with the line dances, and only play them if he really needs to because no one is dancing!

My family loves them! They’re fun (even though they’re cheesy) and they get people dancing. We did the electric slide, the wobble, and the Macarena.

Maybe as a compromise, your FH could have one of them played when you have to use the ladies room! Because at some point during the day, you're going to have to go, and it make take a bit of time, depending on your dress.

Then you don't have to be involved, and he gets to have his line dance. Win-win

Out of all the weddings I’ve been to, the ones that had one or two line dances I think were the most fun! That’s when I would see more of the older generation out on the dance floor having a blast and laughing Smiley smile

We had a few request the Cupid shuffle, it was on our must play list. It got the dance floor packed, where it was sparse before hand. After, it emptied back out. I almost put the wobble on there, then the DJ played it anyway. Lol The others were on my do not play list.

There are a couple of line dances we won't have only because we go country line dancing and the common line dances (electric slide, cupid shuffle, wobble) are so overplayed that we just can't stand them anymore. Though to be honest, the only one I really don't want is the wobble. We'll have some more line dances (Aces and Eights, My Maria, etc.), but we know not all of our guests will know them, so we won't have a lot.

I think its all a personal preference. I love all of them, EXCEPT the Train, though I don't think it counts as a line dance for obvious reasons, its still one of those "traditional" dance songs you play at weddings. That'll be the only one I think we ask out of those to not be played

I love those songs! I think they’re such an easy and universal way to get everyone up and moving! It’s alwahs so much fun dancing with such a large group of people to those songs at events 😄

Lolllll we opened our dance floor by telling everyone to come up for a big photo. Took the photo, then played the cha cha slide.

The Macarena has a lot of childhood memories for me, we played that too and everybodyyy had a blast lol.

If you think about the chacha slide it’s pretty slow, really long, and thus boring for me. It reminds me of the same beat as the Bop-It toy. I feel like I’ve seen more people leave dance floors for line dances over any other dancing song that’s not a slow song.
