Will I regret no wedding cake?

MrsBest2B, on September 16, 2015 at 11:05 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 31

From the beginning, the cake was my least important item. Then FH said "You gotta have cake!" I think he meant dessert in general, not wedding cake because now he's on board with sheet cake. One one hand, cheap cake (sheet cake and a small round cake for display and cutting) sounds better than a tiered expensive cake. Will I regret this? I know I have a lot of time to decide. I'm budgeting right now and it would help to just cut it out, but will I regret not having one? I don't want to regret no wedding cake, but I've honestly never took notice of any wedding cake at any one else's wedding. Afraid of regret.

ADVICE: Go all inclusive! My venue is beautiful, but if I could go back and understand what a non-inclusive entails, I would have probably keep looking. Way to many decisions to make and too many little details become big details.

IMO, most wedding cake sucks. It can be decorated beautifully, but then is dried out or just gross. I have worked events for 8+ years and have seen TONS of wedding cakes. There was only one company in our area who did it well, and it was very expensive to go through them. Everyone else still charged quite a bit, but it was always hit and miss on quality. If anything, rent one of those fake cakes where they stick the piece to cut in the back.

When you ask if you will regret it, are you worried about regretting the cake itself, or the tradition of cutting the cake with your FH?

We'll still cut cake, just a smaller one instead of the big tiered wedding cake. I'm thinking I might regret not having the beautiful tiered wedding cake, but I can't fathom spending $$$ on it. I'm afraid when I look at pictures I'll be sad I didn't do it, but then again.... is it really that big a deal? It's freaking cake lol

I was against getting one and we totally overpaid for ours, but it was delicious and looked beautiful. It was really important to my husband to have one (he didn't want to miss out on anything). It was worth it to me to make him happy. If you can afford it, get a tiered one. Shop around and you can probably find one for a good price it.

I feel a twinge of regret at not planning on a tiered cake because I have always liked them, but on the other hand my venue is completely DIY (the tables and chairs are there, and bathrooms/kitchen etc, but and the rest is up to you) and I don't want my mom or aunt or family members to have to figure out how to cut a tiered cake into 80 pieces. So I'm planning on going the cupcake route, I think. Any regret I have at not having the cake is outweighed by knowing it will be one less thing to worry about on the day of.

And..... my cake topper that I love is about $60. I'm making sure to use it even if I have to bake my own damn cake! I can't believe I spent that much on a cake topper, but I do love it. It's so funny the things we care about. Don't really care about paying for a big 'ol dried out cake, but I buy a $60 figurine to go on top of it! (It was $43 after shipping, added a $9+ dog figurine and bought paint to personalize it)

I think if the cake you cut is beautifully decorated and you have dessert you and your guests will love, you will not regret skipping a tiered fancy cake. If our cake was not included in our package we would have skipped it and done cheesecake and ice cream or cupcakes, or maybe all 3. Neither of us are cake fans either. He likes cheesecake, I like ice cream. We would have had cupcakes to make guests happy. Unfortunately the one thing I still want to nix to save money I can't because the cost is built into my catering!

I think wedding cake mostly tastes horrible and I really don't like frosting. When I was looking at blogs about our venue, I saw one bride that had smaller cakes from Whole Foods and they just looked so pretty. Here is the blog: http://apracticalwedding.com/2014/11/lake-temescal-beach-house-wedding/ and that's some of the cakes.

How big is the base of your cake topper? What you could do is a 6" or 8" base and then a 3" or 4" top tier. Make a small version that you can keep the top tier of for your 1st anniversary and the bottom tier wont to a ton to waste if no one eats it. Do you have any trusted friends or family that are good at baking? I actually do wedding cakes, and the materials aren't that expensive. The majority of the cost comes from the time and labor that goes into the deco on a cake.

I charged $400 for the one in the pic because those tiny flowers took HOURS to cut out and place on the cake. I would go for buttercream (NOT American buttercream, Italian is my favorite to use) because it's cheaper and easier to work with. You could always do a simple buttercream icing with a ribbon around the bottom of the tier and your topper on the top. Cute and simple and still gives you a wedding cake so you wont regret it.

We aren't doing vake- we arr having cupcakes. FH and I will split one of those. I'll contact the baker and have her bake a small cake for our one year anniversary. Normally wedding cakes are terrible but her baking is amazing!

At one reception I attended, there was a 2-layer 8-9" cake on each table as a centerpiece. Each cake was different flavor and on a vintage cake stand (loaned by relatives). We chose our seats at a table with a cake we liked (little signs indicated flavor & filling).

I was going to get sheet cake from a grocery store and just a small cake to cut (and for our topper), but our realtor gave me the name of a former client who bakes for family and friends and her stuff is fantastic (and sooo reasonably priced)! We're going to do cupcakes and a small cake. And I'm totally ordering extras so we can take leftovers on our honeymoon (we're just going a few hours north to my family's cabin) =) Anyway, if the cake aspect isn't important to you, decide what part of it is (taste, the look, whatever) and go with that. I'm sure no one else will notice/care.

I never had a "cake vision" and while we wanted to do the cutting and feeding, we didn't really want cake. In the end, we did a very small (8 inch round) cake with some pretty decorations, then brownies and ice cream for everybody. It was a huge hit! I don't regret it at all, but that's personal because I never really wanted a cake.

And the sizes above are only about $30 each. I talked to a guy at Whole Foods recently (I was staring at the cakes and he asked if I was looking for something) and he said they only need two days notice. Best thing is that they have vegan options too for my Vegan MOH and her boyfriend Smiley smile

I doubt you'll even care down the road. Do what you can, I wouldn't sweat that.

Unless you want to drop the money on a super delicious cake that people will notice (I did, although mostly because it was an occasion to buy a super fancy cake and I don't get those ever), nah. No one cares about a slice of white cake when they're full up from dinner. If you have really traditional relatives, you might want to just to shut mouths, though- my family was on me to cut my cake, although not enough so that they'd have noticed if there were none, more of a 'since it's there' thing, but some relatives might be more into it.
