Wine brands?

Kristen, on June 9, 2017 at 12:24 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 36

This may be a dumb question but here goes....

My venue isn't allowed to provide alcohol; they only have the license to serve it, which means I have to bring in my own. Hey, it saves me money!

We're bringing beer and wine. Beer I have covered. As for the wine... I have no idea what is considered acceptable. The fanciest wine I've ever bought was yellow tail, which is pretty cheap (~$8 for a 750mL bottle). Is that considered too cheap a wine for a wedding? What are some of y'all's favorite brands that you would prefer/expect at a wedding?

I actually love yellowtail. I think it's pretty good and inexpensive. That and barefoot

Barefoot is a good brand I enjoy, as well as Arbor Mist which also tends to run pretty cheap. You could also look into your local wineries and see if they might give you a bulk purchase deal? Thats what I did.

If you like a sweeter wine, try Cupcake Moscato (the blue darker bottle) you won't be disappointed! Or if you are in the aouth where Harris Teeter exist, they do 20% cases of wine every once in a while Smiley smile

Let's start with the price point you are looking to spend per bottle.

Barefoot is such a great wine and a great price. Could you try and find a local winery? I just found out there was one near me and they had free wine tastings. They sold most of their wines from 7.50 to 15 dollars. It was a good find. Just a little idea!

Depends on your audience. The FH and I are getting to be oenophiles so we went through the wine store where we have our wine club. (We also have some fairly sophisticated winos coming to the wedding!)

We've bought 2 cases of red (a bordeaux and a blend, with a cab yet to go), 2 cases of white (a chardonnay and a sauvignon blanc), and 3 cases of prosecco. We paid between $10 and $20 a bottle, with case discounts.

My fav brand is Fish Hippy, an NC company, but I also do really like Barefoot for the price. Do you have a nice liquor store in your area who might do a mini tasting with you?

I love Chateau Ste Michelle's Riesling. We served it at our wedding. The venue charged us around $30 per bottle, and I've seen it served in restaurants at a comparable price...but you can also purchase it for $6 per bottle at Costco.

Depends... Our friends & family really know their wines... I couldn't for the world serve Barefoot, yellowtail or Moscato!

We're serving Trapiche Broquel Malbec ... 12.99 at total wines & more... its an amazing full bodied wine for the price!!

We're not sure yet on white wine... but we're leaning towards Josh Sauvignon Blanc $9.44 at total wines and more!

Price doesn't matter. What matters is if you enjoy the taste and how much you want to spend!

I only drink red wine but my favorites are 14 hands Cabernet, and their Stampede red blend, J Lohr Cabernet and Josh Cabernet. Depending on where you buy these are around $10-15 price mark.

I think that this is a know your crowd situation. Is there a particular guest or two who you know are into wine, or who you are concerned about their opinion of your choice? If so, I'd ask them. Give them the price point you can afford and get some recommendations.

Otherwise, just get what you like the taste of. FH's uncle owns a winery, so I'm sure he'd scoff at my favorite wine--Barefoot's Sweet Red-- but as long as I chose it for a reason, I would totally defend my choice.

Yellowtail and barefoot are good suggestions. Trader Joe's Two Buck Chuck is also good. I read an article today that Aldi's rose (can't get the little accent over the e, sorry!) beat out brands way more expensive and fancy-pants at an International tasting. So that could be good too!

I'm the wrong one to ask. I pick mine based on how cute the label is.

    **Just kidding (only kinda sorta).

I love Apothic and it's probably around the same price point as Barefoot. Everything except the rose is great!

@MGB, I totally bought a bottle of rose a few weeks ago because of the bottle. The bottom is shaped like a rose, with the petals and everything, and there's a pink glass stopper so it's resealable. Unfortunately I don't like the wine that much.

We went with bottles in the 9-15$ range...because we picked some of our favorites that we drink regularly

    We did:

    King Estate pinot grigio

    Eagle Canyon chardonnay

    The Show Cab sav

14 hands (merlot or pinot nior I think)

and a rose, but don't remember the brand...

some other low cost brands that are pretty good are

    ecco domaini

    josh

    root one

    chateau st michelle

Kirkland (Costco brand---its pretty solid for an off brand!)

most places will give you a volume discount...we ended up buying from our local farmers market for the best prices...but our farmers market is unusual-open like a grocery store and the size of a sams club with stuff from all over the world!

Costco was a close second in pricing for us..

I could have gone with a local liquor store but their suggestions were for brands that we don't typically like or feel aren't decent quality (cupcake, barefoot type brands give me killer headaches)

Barefoot and Yellowtail are safe choices.

One cool idea is maybe try to find a local vineyard? Usually local wine (unless you life in wine country) isn't very expensive and its kind of a cool concept. Near me we have Purple Toad and Beachaven wineries that are actually really good and pretty cheap
