Wooden slabs for centerpieces

Kathrine, on October 29, 2018 at 2:14 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 4

My fiancé and I are going to use some wood that we have to cut into slices for our centerpieces. It was cut a week or so ago, and the wedding is in July. Has anyone done this and have any advice about when to cut the slices, if we should treat them with anything, and how to store them to make sure they look good on our wedding day? Thanks in advance!

Hi Katherine! I have done this before, but not for a wedding! The likelihood is that they will split and not remain perfect circle since your wedding is not until July! I also suggest using a gloss if you'd like for them to be shiny, and definitely sand them down before coating! Are you planning to store them indoors? Try not to keep them near cold temperatures, as this can cause damages or increase moisture! What other decorative elements do you plan to use?

We will be storing them inside, so should we cut and treat them as soon as they dry out? we plan to use small vases, both clear and milk glass, and probably baby's breath and lavender. We are going for a simple look, and I'm excited to see how it turns out!

They were cut pretty early, so they’ll most likely crack well before your wedding. We had our wooden chargers cut from a cedar tree about a week and a half prior to our wedding day. They came from a friend who has a wood mill, and he suggested having them cut as close to the wedding as possible to prevent any cracking. There are a bunch of articles online on how to seal wood chargers, though! Several coats of clear polyurethane after sanding is the general consensus on keeping them in good shape from what I’ve seen. Worse comes to worse, you’ll have some cracked chargers. But I think it could give some nice character to them as long as the cracks don’t split them in half or anything!

I think that sealing them as soon as they are dry is a good idea, but as mentioned by QueenBee, it's likely that they will still crack in the meantime!
