Word of the day - haboob

krisalicious, on July 22, 2012 at 3:13 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18

"A haboob (Arabic: هَبوب‎ "strong wind") is a type of intense duststorm carried on an atmospheric gravity current. Haboobs occur regularly in arid regions throughout the world."

Try using it in a sentence. Like, holy crap, check out the photos of this haboob that blew through Phoenix yesterday at 5pm!!!!!! WTH?

Haboob.

They get those in southern Idaho, too. "70mph winds, and two drops of rain" as the saying goes. Looks like a huge mess.

It totally does, right? I was checking the weather and the photos popped up. I'm not a desert/plains girl, I've never seen that before!! Crazy!

I'm more shocked than anything that people are just driving into it. Like, ho hum, I'm on the freeway, ooh look there's a giant dust storm, I'll drive through it, NBD.

Not bad. But I liked kaboobs better. It has the KABOOOOM sound to it just with boobs.

I had fun with using that one in sentences the whole afternoon :-) It's obviously cuter and funnier than this haboob mess.

Wow... we get those in Lubbock all the time....

We have dust bizzards sometimes, it's crazy, and I never saw it up in Colorado when I was growing up.

Wow, what a sheltered life I lead, these photos look like the apocalypse to me. I didn't realize it was a NBD happens-all-the-time kinda thing! Holy crap!

Courtney what do you mean you drove through it? How can you drive in that nonsense? And lol at your friend's kitty. Heeeeeeere Haboobie! Good girl! lol.

Mrs S I was totally thinking "kaboob" when I read the news. lmao.

It happens a lot in the summer. Its weird and looks like the apocalypse out there. We were going to a friends house and it was in full force. It looks thick in those photos but it disperses so its just like driving through a dust storm.

Uhm, it seems I'm sharing the sheltered life. So indeed, how do you drive through it? Do you just cross your fingers and hope for the best?

I still think haboob and kaboob are cool. So similar yet so different. For example, you could say things are "haboobastic", but "kaboobilicious".

OMG kaboobielicious. I might need a new screen name. lmao!

I have the same driving question as Mrs S. I'll ford a suspicious stream up in the mountains no problem (thank you SUV) but I don't like driving into clouds of things that make me unable to see....also doesn't it fly up into your vents and blind you in your car???

Ladies, Please issue incontinence warnings! You know us "bladder impaired" old tarts can be counted on a rather warm feeling after a good laugh.

Kris...You totally need to change your name. lolol

Re the haboob. Holy crap! This city girl would have shyte her pants. I dont like driving in the rain, but a dust storm?? No way!

Yes it looks like it would be hard to see driving thru them but its not that bad at all. The wind is the worst part of it.

Wow those pictures are crazy! Fh and I drove through one last year when we were driving to visit friends in Phoenix. I'd never been in dust storms but it was like a super heavy fog. So weird. And yeah, pretty scary driving in it!

Oh the joys of living in a desert lol. These things are so dangerous especially if you're driving. You go from fine to 0% visibility and you have to pull over and wait it out. And normally they accompanied by strong winds and a huge rain/thunderstorm after. Forget about washing your car...I wait until monsoon season is over to even think about washing it.

Smiley surprise I've never heard of it before. So it only looks like the apocolypse, but just has the visibility variance of a blizzard? I can handle that. The way it looks I was scared you'd all get blown away or something.

On another note, am I the only one who was remided of The Lion King when Mufasa rolled out in cloud form?
