Worried my dress won't photograph well

Laura, on February 25, 2017 at 7:01 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 37

I went veil shopping today and tried on my dress for the first time since I bought it in August. I love my dress when I have it on but I just don't like it in pictures! One of my friends that was with me took a few pics today to send my mom and I just don't like how it looks. My friends love it and said I was being crazy but then the salesgirl even told me that satin photographs oddly and to look at my photographers test shots to make sure I like them.

Or maybe it's just because it's a cell phone camera and I'm not like all made up... I don't know. I'm just worried I'll look awful in our wedding pictures!

I'm worried about the same thing I just bought my dress the other day and it looks stunning in person and in the pictures it looks like a white potato sack

Do you have any photos of it? I'm sure it looks great, you could be right about the cell phone photos though.

Ugh I hate even posting pics, that's how much I don't like it in them.

This pic is from the day I bought it and the most full length one. I'll post ones from today (I had some beading removed in the front)

I feel like it makes me look wide in the hips but since I want to lose 20 more lbs hopefully that'll help.

I think t looks amazing! I think it's hard to visualize when your hair and makeup isn't done but remember that it'll be very different. Plus different lighting! I wouldn't worry but if you are I might have someone try in more natural lighting and with a digital camera to get a better idea.

That dress is beautiful on you! You're being photographed in the harsh lighting of the bridal salon which is completely different than natural lighting. I think you'll be fine! All of my pictures from the bridal salon I hate except for the ones where I was standing near the front of the store where natural light was coming in.

I'd tell your photographer your concern and see if she can show you a sample of her past work from someone wearing a satin dress. It'll probably put your mind at ease.

Photographs don't do my dress justice either. It's constantly mentioned on the reviews page of David's Bridal. But PP are right, bridal store lights are AWFUL! I'm sure it will look a lot better when it's in natural lighting and you're all made up.

Plus...it's your photographer's JOB to get the lighting right...with a REAL camera. Your friends just point and shoot. They don't know the most flattering techniques.

Mention to your photographer though that you're concerned with how your dress photographs and I'm sure they'll be very thoughtful of your concerns as they shoot your wedding day.

You're beatiful! I think the lighting is not doing the dress justice. How do you feel in it? Photos can be edited haha, your feelings can't

Thank you everyone for the kind words! I did email my photographer tonight and mentioned my concerns, and sent him these pics. He seems really great so hopefully his pics will do it justice!

I don't think you've got anything to worry about. That first photo looked like something out of a magazine!

The other thing is your dress will be steamed before the big day so any wrinkles should be gone

You're not going to be STANDING there like that when you get married- you'll be A. doing things- or B. being posed- or C. dancing.

It's beautiful- if you've hired the best photographer you can afford- you shouldn't worry- they will make a burlap sack look amazing and artful. (fortunately this isn't that and they won't have to work that hard because it's lovely and you should be really excited about it!)

I heard back from my photographer this morning and unfortunately I'm more scared than ever. Here's his email:

Satin tends to be kind of a semi-glossy fabric and indeed does reflect light in different ways -- I dont use a ton of artificial light when I shoot, so everything tends to look exactly how it looked in real life. -- our camera phones as well, unless using the flash, are not using artificial light, so they also tend to photograph things the way they are seen in real life. -- i.e. if you dont like it in photos with your phone, your likely not going to like it in photos period - and it sounds like the salesperson may be trying to save the sale. Satin is just one of those materials that reacts oddly to light -- sort of semi-glossy effect in some spots, and in other spots it gets really dark.

So naturally I am freaking out. Where's the reassurance like 'here's what we can do to make it work!' I mean do no other brides wear satin? I texted my bridesmaids in a panic and they were quick to point out some of their friends wore satin and looked beautiful so that made me feel better. What are your ladies thoughts?

I love that! And tbh I don't think it looks bad at all! Lighting will be so much better at your wedding and reception so try not to worry too much! It's so easy to worry about little things when they're too late. The pro pics will turn out great. You're beautiful!

Why do you think it doesn't photography well? I am not a satin person by any means, but that dress is absolutely stunning and it's absolutely stunning on you. I don't think you need to worry too much about it Smiley smile

Posting again bc I'm a loser and didn't keep reading all the comments for your update.

I'm kind of surprised that your photographer is being so negative. The natural light will be better at your venue. I'm sure the bridal salon is using fluorescents, which makes everyone look bad. Maybe do a search for wedding pics where the bride wore satin.
