Worried We Didn't Postpone Far Enough Out

Kim, on April 18, 2020 at 4:28 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 24
Anyone else worried they didn't postpone far enough out? We went from beginning of June to mid-August. We thought it was a great decision at the time, as we both have kids and can't wait until school starts back (end of August here in NC), and thought that August was far enough out to give this virus some time to calm down. We already ordered change the dates and they're stamped and ready to be sent out in Monday. My fiance is army (stationed in NC, all family is in MN....the reason our wedding is in MN), and we just got word today that the military travel ban has been extended to June 30th and may eventually be extended even farther out. We also, already notified our guests who are traveling from out of state to MN (half of them are military too) of the date change. I'm not feeling too good about things right now, but it wasn't an option to move the wedding to next year because he's supposed to start a year training program in January that does not allow for days off. I'm at a lost of what to do at the moment 😓... Any advice or encouraging words are much appreciated. TIA ❤️

Hi we are also getting married mid August. I’m really hoping to continue as planned.

The best I can suggest is not to send those change the date cards, but instead to send cards saying your wedding is now postponed indefinitely. If the ban on military travel gets lifted June 30, you can always send invitations out then for a wedding in mid-August. If it doesn't, maybe you have a private ceremony in mid-August, and then start planning again for a bigger celebration with all your friends in 2022, once things are more back to normal.

I just think you're going to have issues if you send STDs for June, then change the dates for mid-August, and then potentially have to send yet more change the dates. At a certain point, people will stop paying attention.

Ughhhh, I worry about that too Smiley sad I guess we've just wasted money on the change the date cards and the stamps that we've already put on the envelopes. Bad thing is we have to let people know ahead of time so that they can make travel arrangements (flights, hotel, time off, etc)

Also, we've already paid for our venue/caterer/other vendors in MN, and it's all non-refundable. Unfortunately, our venue will not allow us to postpone any farther out than April of next year 😓

We have postponed until October and also have made up Change the Date cards.

If we have to change it again, we will. It's definitely stressful not knowing what's going to happen and whether it will work out or not.

We will send out our Change the Date cards and then we'll wait. If we have to make up more, we will. I anticipate the wedding being smaller than we originally thought, which is ok. But I really do think that the people who are most important to us will come even if we have to change again. Everyone understands how difficult this situation is.

Unfortunately we have a bunch of international guests and we're not at all sure how it will work out with them which is so disappointing. Everyone had their flights booked and hotels ready to go. I don't know if it will work for people to change them again. : (

OMG my FH and I were JUST talking about that. At the end of the day, people have to understand if we need to postpone again. It's clear that we have no control over this and we're just doing the best we can. I agree. The people most important to us and who really care about us, will change arrangements again to be there if need be! Thanks for your encouraging words, and I hope things work out for your international guests too ❤️... We're worried about international travel for our honeymoon too 😬

Omg Kim, how stressful! I think August will be ok for many locations, but no idea on the military travel ban. Wishing you the best and hoping things work out in your favor.

We are not booking another honeymoon just yet which feels a bit sad. We may postpone the honeymoon for a bit beyond the wedding so we don't have two sets of things to worry about at once. LOL

Do you have a “force majeure” written in any of your contracts? A force majeure would prohibit your vendors from not letting you cancel or postpone. I’m pretty sure this would fall under those guidelines.

I'm going to look through our contract and make sure! Thank you! The though that they are allowing us to postpone, but just not beyond April right now. If this virus isn't contained over the next few months, I'm sure they'll keep extended the postponement options, just not beyond next year, and next year wouldn't work for us at all with his training 😓

I know what you mean......I'm hesitant to even post-pone because we have literally no idea when things will get better. We are not even planning to do traditional invites because of this. I think you're right that people will be understanding since this is such a crazy situation. I really hope your August date works out for you :-)

We do have one written into our venue contract, but I don't understand if it works in our favor in this case. :/

That’s exactly what ours says and from what we got from it that basically, if something out of control prohibits you from continuing on with your wedding, you can get a refund. The fact that the country is in a national emergency and that the phase 1,2,3 roll out is prohibiting people from having large gatherings, this could possibly work in your favor. It does mention “other than sum of payments” so not being able to pay due to an act of god wouldn’t qualify. You can google “force majeure weddings Covid-19” and find some more information. Good luck!
