Would you cancel your destination wedding to Mexico if you discovered you are pregnant?

Rebecca, on November 8, 2018 at 12:52 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10
We are a little less than 2 months away from our destination wedding to Mexico. Guests have all paid for their trips.
I found out yesterday that I am pregnant and now i am not sure if I should cancel because of the Zika Virus.
If we cancel guests could still go on their trip, if they chose not to , they would only get 50% of their money back, as long as we make the decision soon. I don't want our friends and family hating us for cancelling this late.

My husband is military and is currently gone in the field and i haven't even had a chance to tell him.

Would you go and take the chance or would you cancel?

I would consult with your doctor!

This is a personal choice that really only you and your FH can make, with the guidance of your OBGYN.

For me personally? I would cancel, because it wouldn’t be worth the risk. I don’t speak for all pregnant people/moms though.

Ask the DR. Maybe just make your trip there short, just the wedding and go home? But I would try not to cancel. I understand that you are worried. Talking to you FH and your doctor would be the best idea.

I would check w a doctor but I honestly would lean towards not canceling... it’s a huge expense for your guests and a ton of planning has taken place. I would be careful and diligent with big spray and being out at higher risk times (evening and early morning) but would think the risk would not be significant with proper precautions.

Its a personal choice bit defiantly talk with your doctor! Resorts usually spray like crazy for mosquitoes though and you and always load up on a safe bug spray. I also heard there are things you can eat now to make your scent unappealing to bugs. Best of luck and congratulations!

Talk to your doctor for sure. It may be fine! But, if your doctor advises against it, I would listen to them. Yes, it may be a hassle to reschedule your wedding/change plans, but you and your family’s health comes first. People might be disappointed but they will understand.

    Obviously talk to a Dr.

Depending on what the Dr. said, I likely would not cancel the wedding and I would be extra careful and constantly be applying bug spray.

Zika has been around FOREVER. My cousin is a traveler and likes to talk to locals. Her best friend was trying to get pregnant but they were all planning a trip to South America together, so my cousin asked locals during a separate trip about it. They told her it's been around forever and not everyone is affected by it the way American media portrays it. Talk to your doctor and then do some research on the area you'll be in for the wedding.

I would consult with your doctor first and foremost.

But I will say, I was actually a bridesmaid in my cousin's wedding in Riviera Maya, Mexico last summer. I can honestly say I did not see one mosquito when we were down there! And I even went on an excursion with my FH into the jungle. I would just make sure that you do have bug spray with you if you still keep your plans! You've already done so much and are so close!
