WR - I'm so Annoyed at Bridal Show Spam

Ana, on February 2, 2011 at 11:03 AM

Stupid me put down my email address on the Bridal show registration. Now, vendors (who I did not give my info to) are spamming my email constantly. Like 5 from the same photographer. I understand one, but come on! Way to ensure that I would never consider your services. Just a heads up to you ladies...

Just a heads up to you ladies who are planning on going to a bridal show in the future. DON'T PUT DOWN YOUR EMAIL!!

Heck yeah, its annoying!!! Like some others have previously stated, a seperate email for wedding stuff is def the right way to go. The pro's has got to be the absolute worse! The same "joe" guy keeps emailing me!!! I seriously get an email just about every other day from him. I've unsubscribed 4 times already!! I finally sent them a email requesting to be removed from their list. I hope I wont have to get "Joe" on the phone and tell him about himself! *ugh*

I've been to two bridal shows. One was the New York Wedding event sponsored by New York Magazine. The only e-mails I got were from companies whom I had given my e-mail address to when I entered whatever giveaway they were having.

The other show was the New York Wedding Salon. It was significantly smaller and I gave my e-mail address to very few vendors. Since then I've gotten dozens of e-mails from companies I didn't even realize were there. Obviously, my e-mail address was given to those vendors by the Wedding Salon.

Moral of the story? I'll recommend the NY Wedding event to anyone. I probably won't recommend the Wedding Salon's events.

Though I did get to meet Carol Hannah from "Project Runway" at the Wedding Salon event, so that was fun!

@Nancy T. and Lisa - If I personally give you my email address or phone number, then I am okay with you emailing me.

If I didn't give that info to you personally, then one or two emails is understandable. However, to just mass email the same exact email over and over again is just annoying.

    Thanks, Ana.

When I get a lead list from a show, I only do one mailing because I realize that if the couple does not want a civil officiant today, they probably won't next month either.

If a couple contacts me thru my website, I'll usually e-mail them my newsletters until their date is past or they ask me to stop.

From a wedding vendors point of view on this subject. I think it is totally unprofessional and childish to keep on emailing people. If I get a lead in I email them once and then if they don't respond, I just simply move on. I don't have the time in the day to keep sending the same email to that potential client, just hoping she/he would say yes. Personally, I never attend wedding shows anymore. All my advertising is basically done by word of mouth or by weddingwire. I am actually writing a book called; "The Ultimate Wedding," It is an informational guide to planning your dream wedding on any budget. It should be on amazon and also my website soon, just waiting on it being published.

I have been to 2 bridal expo's/show while I was engaged. Been married for almost 9 months and it hasn't stopped yet. In my area vendors don't care that your wedding date has passed they still email you crap! I used to get about 15 or more emails a day about vendor related stuff and now it's like 5 to 10. There's this one photographer that I told sorry my date has passed and you keep at it and she replied "Planning a renewal anything soon or in the future?" it's ridiculous!

Actually @Melissa McClain I think that is a little harsh on vendors who chose to do a show. I personally do shows to get my name out there and meet brides. I offer bridal show specials but they last through the end of the month in which the bridal show was held and are offered to everyone who comes in to the studio. Most of us are just trying to make a living and are passionate about what we do so we spend a lot of time and money trying to find our brides and make them happy. It frankly saddens me just a bit that just because bridal shows don't work for you that you have to put down others who choose to involve them as part of their marketing budget. I think it's a little prejuidical to put down people who are simply trying to make a living doing what they love even if their method is different from yours personally.

Nancy is correct, the vendors at the shows all get a list of who registered at the door. Some not-so-reputable vendors will also sell or give this list to other people they know in the wedding business, despite the agreement made with the venue. I would never send 5 emails in the same week to someone. Perhaps they have you entered more than once on their list, or have a problem with their email blast. I held a drawing at a bridal show just this past weekend, and I know there were many afraid to give their email address, until I reassured them I only send maybe one email per year to the same address. I just don't have time to harass potential clients! Speaking for other reputable vendors, not all of them will do this to you.
