Writing My Vows...this is hard!

Kristina, on August 1, 2018 at 12:40 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 25

Oh my goodness. I finally sat down and started writing my vows. I've written and erased them like, 5 times now because NONE of them feel right! I'm not even sure where to start now!

I just want them to be perfect!

Anyone else have a hard time writing their vows?

I haven't started yet but, whenever I think of something I jot it down in a file I have saved to my computer. I'm hoping I can use that as inspiration when I'm ready.

Writer's block sucks. Maybe stop for a bit and do something that will put you in the proper mindset and then start again. Perhaps flip through photos of you and FH while listening to your first dance song or have a relaxing bath and just think of what made you fall in love with him.

I wonder if it would help to maybe ask yourself some questions that are usually answered in vows, but instead of feeling pressured to write, just turn on your voice memo and start talking. Maybe also ask a friend to join so if can feel more like a conversation. Ask yourself questions like:

    - When did you know you were in love with FH?

    - What are the top 3-5 things you love about your FH?

    - How does FH make you a better person?

    - What are the most important promises you want to make to your FH?

    - What does your life look like with FH by your side?

Maybe talking through these things will help! And then you can go back to the voice memo and write down what you love.

Girl, yes! It feels like the words I've written are not adequate to describe my love for FH...Plus he's the most eloquent, well spoke person I know so I already KNOW he's written something beautiful...The pressure is on!

I wouldn't over think it. Writing down nice things about your partner when they pop into your head. If like to think I'm pretty decent writing things, and mines has been done for about 6 months and FH hasn't even thought about his. Our Officiant have us templates for him to use as well. It should always come from the heart though.

Maybe start fee writing. What ever comes to your mind. Wait a couple days and go back through what you wrote and see what pops out for you.

I keep reminding myself that I need to do this, but every time I think about it, I get stressed! Seems like it would be easy, but it's hard sometimes to put feelings into words, in a beautiful way.

Okay, I wrote something. I like it so far, although having it done 2 weeks before will allow me to kind of tweak it as much as I need to. What do you think?

I promise today to choose you for the rest of my life. I promise to love you, cherish you, support you, and grow with you as we learn more about who we are as a couple. I promise to laugh with you and grow with you. I promise to create a home filled with love, laughter, and loyalty. I promise to lift you up in your triumphs and grieve your losses as though they were my own. I promise to indulge your love of food and explore new cuisine with you. I promise to laugh at your corny jokes, even if they’re pretty lame. I promise to work out our issues with love and communication, no matter what comes our way. I promise, mostly, to love you unconditionally and continue to be excited about what our future holds. Today, I promise to be your best friend, partner in crime, and most importantly, your wife.

We originally were going to write our own... it got VERY overwhelming for both of us.. you would think it wouldnt be so hard to write about how much you love someone and your vow to them... but it is girl! we ended up going with a "repeat after me" vow that we customized!

    Good luck! Smiley smile

I struggled, a lot, so i started by searching the internet for other examples of self-written vows. I took a few lines out from ones i found online that really spoke to me. Then i kind of just used that as a starting point, and wrote my own vows around those lines. Then took those lines out/changed them, so that it would be all my words. It was a good way to have something to start with though!

    Good luck!

Omg this! I'm a writer too and my vows were BY FAR the thing I have struggled the most with when it comes to writing! I feel like it's because everything I wrote sounded like an underexaggeration... there are no words to use that are strong enough!

I haven't started writing yet, but I am thinking I'm going to start by just listing wonderful things about my fiance and thinking about the highlights of our relationship. Maybe getting in the mood by listening to some romantic music would help too?

I had a hard time too but i looked at examples for inspiration and that helped!! Also write how you feel and what you want to promise him then take some time away and come back to really make sure your vows are clear and make sense. Good luck!

So far im going with: on this day I give you my heart and I promise to be faithful and supportive, and to always make our families love and happiness a priority. I will be yours in plenty and in want and in failure and in Triumph. I will dream with you, celebrate with you and walk hand-in-hand beside you through whatever our life may bring.

I sat down to try writing mine a week ago, and found it much easier than I anticipated! It only ended up taking me about 10 minutes, I love them, and I've received positive feedback on them. SO here is what I did--hopefully it helps you!!!

    - if traditional vow formats are making it difficult, throw them out the window
    - write them as if you are speaking only to your fiance and just trying to get your point across, not "performing" them in front of a crowd
    - think of 3 things you love about your fiance, 3 things you want to be to them as a wife, and 3 fond memories that immediately come to mind. You don't have to use all of this, but it really helped me figure out the direction I wanted to go
    - keep them fairly short

Good luck and I'm sure they'll be lovely!!!

Didn't see this before I posted. What nice promises! Just double check the beginning where you mention growing together twice; it fits very nicely into the second place you have it. I don't think you'll have any problem on your day, these sound very nice.
