Writing thank you notes

Sarah, on July 18, 2021 at 2:16 AM Posted in Planning 1 21
I am curious on how everyone went about writing their thank you notes? I just had my bridal shower and my sister wrote down every gift I received from each person. Now growing up I was always told to write thank you for the generous gift or thank you for the thoughtful gift, never to say in the card what you received. Would I do the same for the bridal shower gifts or would I put: ex: Thank you Abby for the cook wear baking set.?

I always write thank you notes like so:

    Salutation

    Thank you for specific item

Intention of use of said item

    Personal note

    Thank you again

    Signature

Definitely following. I just had a bridal shower and was going to ask this same question.

For physical gifts, I thanked for the specific gift. Example: “Tim, thank you so much for the glassware.” For cash/checks, I just wrote “generous gift” and for a few people I told them what we’d be using it for.

I use your wording for cash gifts, but I mention other gifts, and if I can, how I’m looking forward to using it.
“Auntie Penelope, thank you so much for the Kitchenaide mixer! The blue will go so well in my kitchen. Every time I make bread I will think of you!”

I think if someone gave you a specific gift and not cash you should mention that gift in your thank you card. If it’s cash then your wording is great.

I do the same thing. And it’s how I was taught as a kid.

Yep, how my Grammy taught me!

It does appear to be a disappearing art, though, a lot of our circle never did manage thank you notes.

We got all our shower thank yous out in ... about 2 weeks? And our wedding gifts out in about a month.

The baby shower ones might be harder, though.

Ok, so let’s say Sam gave us a blender. I would say, thank you Sam for the blender, I can’t wait to use this for smoothies and milkshakes. Would that be an acceptable response?

All of these responses are correct. It's 100% okay (and preferred) to thank someone for a specific item if you receive a physical gift, as well as put a little note about what it means to you/how you will use it/why its special, etc. If you receive cash/check I would just write "generous gift" and there is no need to elaborate further.

This is how I write thank you notes as well!

For monetary gifts, I just say thank you for the generous gift in place of the specific item's name! I just think this formula is fool proof!

What about if someone gave you a gift card? I received a lot of gift cards. Also my grandma and aunt combined their gifts together, so I don’t know who to thank for what. They both said the gifts where from both of them.

If it's a gift card, I usually say "thank you for the (blank) gift card. I am going to use it for (blank).

For your grandma and aunt, I would send them each (essentially) the same note, because they probably pooled money and it isn't part from one and part from the other.

You are WAY overthinking and overcomplicating it.

Gift card - I would say "thanks for the gift card to NAME OF PLACE", we are looking forward to using it for "ACTIVITY". So for example, "Thanks for the gift card to Local Restaurant - its one of our favorites! We are really looking forward to a relaxing date night!"

Also for aunt/grandma, simply thank them both for both gifts.

I said thank you for coming, and also included a thank you for the specific item as well as an explanation of what I plan to do with it. Example:

“Thank you for the beautiful lamp! It gets so dark and cold here in the wintertime, so some extra light will go a long way” etc

I was thinking the same thing for my grandma and aunts thank you cards. Since I don’t think my grandma want my grandpa to know what all she gifted my fiancé and I for the bridal shower.

My mom told me for my grandma just to say thank you for the thoughtful gift, and to say I enjoyed having her come and visit for the shower. Since if I mention anything she got me, my papa will get mad at my grandma and stop talking to her for a month.
