Wwyd? Cut guests or upgrade to a larger less appealing event space?

Mrs.a, on June 17, 2020 at 11:50 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 18

FH & I are at odds on what to do. Our current reception space we reserved can only accommodate 24 guests (50% capacity) in the green phase here in PA. It’s in a very cute cafe/bakery that’s part of a larger venue and they can cater, etc. There’s a long communal table and a few tables that seat 3-4, etc, BUT we were anticipating inviting upwards of 30 guests.

Then there’s another room that feels more like a conference room, although it has an industrial vibe. They can accommodate more guests and we wouldn’t have to cut our guest list.

I’m torn as I don’t want to cut guests, but we sat down and came up with a plan to do so. He doesn’t want to change locations at our venue...What would you do?

I think so too! But FH has his heart set on the first event space.

I like the alternative room much more. There's not a huge difference between the cap of 24 guests and your list of 30. Who would you have to cut? Is there any "fluff" or are all 30 equally important? If you'll be bummed to have to cut any of the six you'll have to, I'd change rooms. People and relationships are more important to me (especially since I like the bigger room better anyway). Will the bakery still provide the catering if you move to the new room?

The conference room doesn’t look conference-y with that fabulous brick wall. I think the space looks good!

Hey Thanks! We would have to ask certain guests not to bring children, our single friends not to bring dates, and cut 1-2 more guests somewhere, which is tough.

IDK I feel so torn FH wants the original space and I don’t want to cut guests.

The bakery is part of the larger Hotel/Venue that is providing the catering and it’s all technically on the same site, so yes, they would still cater there.

Right? It has a nice rustic industrial vibe. I just love the bakery and so does he...this is so hard. One of the most stressful things we’ve encountered so far.

Yeah, I actually prefer the conference room compared to the bakery. Since most weddings have some people who can't make it, is it possible to leave it to chance? Invite everyone and when you get RSVPs back you can choose which space fits? Some guests may not want to bring a date or their kids. I know that happened at my wedding (although my guest list was way bigger than yours).

You can definitely make the conference room work. That brick wall helps a lot and I'm sure the decorations will make it look incredible. If you're adding the extra and they are extremely important, then I'd go with the conference room. If you can live without the extra guests, then I'd stick with the cafe.

Very true about RSVPs! I know my one friend does not want to bring their daughter so they can have more of a date night.

Yes, I think it’s doable even though we don’t love it.

However looking at our guest list again, we would just have to cut children and dates for two single friends to be right at 24 people (including ourselves).

I see. So if that works for you then go for it. I think both areas are nice.

I think so too, but after having slept on it and talking about it this morning, I’m feeling better about just cutting children and dates for single friends. That’ll keep us to our 24 limit and we won’t have to change spaces Smiley smile

FH is happy, and I’m comfortable with that.

I actually prefer the 2nd space. You could decorate that really nicely and make it look like more of a wedding venue than the cafe. So, that would be my choice.

Thanks! We really liked that the cafe was a little more offbeat and more us than feeling like a venue. If we limit it to adults only and no dates for singles we’ll make the cut at 24 😊

Yeah, I had one friend say that she would like an adult night with no kids when I originally said we would allow kids.

I personally like the conference room option. The first photo you posted of the conference room looks very nice and "wedding-y" to me!
