Your engagement: Did you know it was coming?!

Could you tell when he / she was going to pop the question, or was your engagement a complete surprise?? If you're the one that popped the question, did you surprise your SO??

I knew - we were together for a long time and I was definitely talking about it a lot. After our four year anniversary and no ring I was a bit surprised and thinking that it was never going to happen and that I was being dragged along. Shortly after FH's friends GF of less than a year mentioned that she and him were starting to talk marriage and I sort of freaked on FH (not cool on my part). But I was tired of him saying it was something that he wanted and he not doing it (it had been two years of this), and I just said "I really wish you would have just said, 'I don't want marriage', because obviously it's not happening", at least it would have given me the opportunity to think if it was something I was willing to give up for him, he just snapped and said "OH MY GOD, I'M PROPOSING IN LONDON WHEN WE ARE THERE IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS!"

    my bad....

Yes, I knew when and where. lol. He thought I didn't know but my family couldn't keep it a secret. I still cried even though I knew.

I totally knew for a good month and a half before. He let it slip three or four months before that he had a ring, so I knew it was coming. As part of the gift he gave me for our five year anniversary, He had told me that he was taking me to a terrarium private workshop the next month. I wanted to go to one for a few years. Every time I asked about what design we would do, he got a little nervous and said it had to have a treasure box in it. Then the week before the class, I let it slip that I suspected he was going to propose. Somehow he was able to convince me that he wasn't going to. So I ended up being a little surprised.

He had the ring in our safe for 2.5 years! He proposed while we were opening presents Christmas morning. He had went the day before and asked my dad and son, my son was so excited. That morning while I was taking a shower I had a feeling he was going to, I even almost checked the safe to see if the ring was still there. I have no idea why I thought he might, we hadn't talked about it in a long time.

I know it's coming since we've been unofficially planning together for the last 6 months. I feel like it's coming in January, but I'm not 100% sure. Even though we both know exactly what's going on here and we've already set a date and picked 2 top venues, it's still important to me that the official proposal and engagement are all him. I don't even know what kind of ring he will be getting. He's asked some informed questions, but I also what that to be completely him.

@Jenn B every walk you were prepared--LOL I know the feeling! FH bought the ring with my knowledge (I picked it out) a whole 5 months before he proposed. That five months included our anniversary, my birthday, another sort of anniversary, and two vacations. I did not handle it well. I got so upset every time we had a special day and he didn't propose. I tried to be very agreeable when he suggested activities and dates during that time, but according to him I ruined his plan more than once!

I did. I wanted to be surprised, but it was my own fault.

I got upset when he promised me in 2013 that he would propose to me in 2014 and the first week of November I finally cracked and asked him if he was just kidding because we had bought our house 3 months prior, and I was starting to get kind of scared he wasn't taking this as seriously as I thought. Then he told me he was proposing that weekend. Ugh. Lol.

But this was also after everyone trying to convince me/messing with my head on several other occasions that he was going to do it and I was secretly kind of disappointed he didn't do it like our cruise or when we moved into the house because he was acting really weird those first few days.

Macro: I didn't know he was planning to propose or that he'd bought a ring. We'd talked about marriage, but no specifics.

Micro: The day before he proposed, he asked me to grab his wallet out of his backpack, and I found the box by accident. It took every ounce of self-control I had not to open the box. I convinced myself there were cufflinks in the box (we were out-of-town for a friend's wedding). An hour before he proposed, we were getting ready to head to the beach, and he suddenly cared what I was wearing. Being a little suspicious, I looked at his pockets and saw the box. So, when he actually got down on his knee, I knew.

I knew. We went over ring styles together so he could get me one he knew I would like. I know some people wouldn't have liked that but it was perfect for us. We just make all our decisions together.

He doesn't know this, but I saw the box in his car a few days before he proposed. FH is normally super careful and would never leave an expensive ring in the cupholder of his car! But his nervous brain must of forgot about it. We were getting out of the car after running errands and there were lots of bags and stuff so I looked around and I saw it as I was getting out of the car. I didn't open it but my heart stopped for a minute and I got out and pretended I didn't see anything.

We started ring shopping in Nov and he proposed in March and that time between was so magical! I loved it and I hated it, haha. He was just extra romantic and knowing that we were about to take this big step in our relationship just made us feel even more in love! He ended up proposing after his birthday party. We were sitting on our bed just talking about what a great day it had been and how much fun we had with our friends and family and he started saying mushy stuff and got down on one knee. I didn't expect that! I thought he was going to propose the day before when we were at the wine bar be frequent.

Yes and no. We had been talking for months about getting married so I knew a proposal was coming. I just didn't know when.

I think we were both kinda surprised. He had a two year plan but then FMIL got her rings cleaned and separated for him to have (along with his dads ring who has passed away) She had given him the rings and even though he didn't plan on asking so soon (6 months before 2 years). So they were burning a hole in his pocket and since he was going to ask anyway and I was going to say yes, he went ahead and asked early.

My family was visiting me and I had no idea he was doing it. In my head I was saying that I need to figure out where we go from here because I was fed up lol and then that night he proposed. He wrote it on my birthday cake. My family, close friends, and children were there. I was so shocked I forgot to say yes. It was perfect!

It was a complete surprise, I thought he was going to propose 2 weeks before when we were in the outer banks and when he didn't I was disappointed. I'm glad he did it when he did and I'm glad it was a huge surprise. Our friends got pictures and a video.

I suspected, but wasn't sure and didn't want to get my hopes up in case it didn't happen. We had dinner reservations at a French restaurant in New York. I honestly didn't think he'd do it in public like he did. That's not really his thing. Hindsight being 20/20, I should have known when he wanted brand new clothes for dinner what was up

I knew it was coming, but didn't know when or how. We went to the mall and he shopped while I got my nails done. He couldn't conceal the bag. So he made up a story about needing to get is sized. He proposed the next day when we went to the beach to watch the sunset. Got me.

100 % surprised and caught off guard!!

We were celebrating our 1 yr anniversary and went away for the weekend. He even planned ahead and had photographers take pics and record the proposal. My daughters were in on it for months. He asked them for permission first then took them shopping for the ring. He then asked my parents for permission to marry their daughter the night before we left. Yup he did good and I was completely surprised!

Lol so fh last Xmas bought me new boots. It was thanksgiving time but he wanted to make sure they fit. They did not fit and were not my style. So that night he was like, show me the ring you have been wanting. We sat down and bought the ring online. Lol he never said when he was going to ask or how. Thanksgiving weekend we pick it up on our way to his parents. Yeah they already knew he bought it. He decided to ask me when we were playing cards with his parents and grandparents. Lol all night I was wondering when he was going to ask. It was still special and a surprise since he got down on one knee and his mom picked up a flower

I was fairly certain it was going to happen just not when. He had already moved in with me and we had been talking about it. I wasn't sure how long it would take because he said he wanted to take things slow. So when he actually proposed was a very big surprise cause it was only 7 months into our relationship but I new from the beginning that no matter when it happened I would say yes.

I had wanted to get engaged for a long time, we were talking about it frequently and I kept waiting and waiting for it, and it just never happened. It was MY idea to go to the beach that weekend, and when we went on a walk (something we always do at the beach) I was TOTALLY surprised when he got down on one knee! I actually think I was more surprised that he was able to surprise me haha - I am nearly impossible to surprise! I was seriously in shock. I didn't know he had gotten my dad's blessing, I didn't know he had gotten my grandmother's diamond from my mom, I didn't know he had gotten the ring or ANYTHING! Looking back, I am so glad that I had no idea!!
