Zales and diamond swapping? Paranoid!

Markie, on October 9, 2017 at 4:17 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 7

I just recently learned that Zales and Kay's parent company was caught swapping diamonds while rings were getting sized/repaired last year. My ring is from Zales. Anyone that has a Zales or Kay ring since then, have your diamonds been switched? Just wondering because I dropped my ring off 3 weeks ago(still haven't heard anything about it =( )at Zales and read about this after dropping off my ring and now I'm paranoid!

I have a Kay's ring and honestly I have no idea lol when I went to pick it up they basically rushed me out so I couldn't look to double check if my diamond's the same. I do have an impurity and they marked it down on the paper so I'll know for sure in March when I go to get it inspected again (hoping it wasn't switched, not sure what they'd do for me then).

There have been a couple of old posts on this issue in the forums lately. I would google Zales/Kay and Wedding wire. or search them on the forums

I'm pretty sure jereds is either a sister company or at least similar enough. That is where FH bought my promise and engagement rings. They recently have started taking pictures of the rings before they send them out. They pointed out the "feather" in my diamond (a slight imperfection that shows that it's legit) and when I get my ring back they will take another picture and compare it to the first. This is something that they just recently started to do and unfortunately I didn't know about it. I went to bring my promise ring in because when I got it resizes I noticed the next day that one of the diamonds is missing. Well. They put it under a microscope and there's not even prongs!! My jeweler said "there's no proof that there was a diamond there to begin with" and they didn't take a picture when we went so now I'm missing a diamond. On my day off tomorrow I'm going to go raise hell.

Anyway, my point is. If they have the machine that shows you your ring in a screen close up I recommend having them use it. Have them show you the imperfections and do the same when you get the ring back. Obviously it is a little late for that since you already have your ring shipped out but just for future reference!!

When you or FH got the ring one of the first things should be to take it somewhere to be inspected and get the written details of it so that if you find sometime f different about it in the future you have paperwork to prove otherwise.

H got mine at an independent jeweler in the city. I won't go anywhere else for cleaning, inspection, resizing, etc.

@Kori I'm definitely going to look at it through a microscope when I go to pick it up. Good idea! And so far we've been dealing with the manager who's been extremely helpful so far. Except when I called Saturday the lady I talked to wasn't very pleasant and was rude right off the bat. So I was rude right back and she dropped her attitude. Lol I just hope everything goes well whenever it comes in.

This has been going on for years. This is one of the main reasons we went with a local jeweler.

I had an issue with them having to send my ring back three times and on the third time it was sent for a REPAIR it came back a different size without a little mark on it that was there before. I am almost certain that it is a different one than the first time and instead of repairing it they just sent me a different one. It makes me so sad that I don't think this is the actual one that my fiance proposed with.
