Zales Wrecked my Engagement Ring

Kendell, on September 25, 2018 at 5:00 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 32

Hi everyone. I just got my engagement ring back from Zales after getting it sized down one size. It took two weeks and I was super excited to get it back- until I got it back. They messed my ring up in so many ways that I am just shocked. When I picked it up in the store, I noticed the engraving on the inside was gone. The lady showed me it under a microscope and said I could see it then... The point of the engraving is not to need a microscope to see it. Next, I noticed some of the diamonds in the pavé band were not as close together as they should be- there were big gaps that make it unsightly. The employee and manager told me I could bring it back when I am ready and they will fix it and then rushed us out the door. As we got home I kept looking at the ring. I noticed the center ring was off center, as well as part of my ring is burned? How do you burn a ring? I used to love it, but now I hated it and couldn't quite put my finger on why. Until I noticed that part of my ring that was YELLOW GOLD was now WHITE GOLD. They coated part of my ring with rhodium even though it wasn't supposed to be!! I am now getting ready to meet with a manager, but after reading so many terrible reviews online, I am feeling discouraged in them making it right. I am also upset that I will likely have to get a new ring- this one holds so much sentimental value because it is the ring I was proposed to with, but I don't even like looking at it now because it makes me so upset that they could mess it up that bad. I am looking for advice for things to say/ask about when I go to the store and speak with the manager. Also, if anyone else has a similar situation I would love to know how you handled it. Thanks everyone

Is it insured? You may be able to claim damage since they actually damaged the ring. Did you have an appraisal done prior to this cleaning? You could take it to a 3rd party jeweler for their advice too.

Oh my. I don't have anything to add as I agree with FutureMrsD, but I really hope they can get it back to normal for you without much headache. So sorry you're dealing with this! Please let us know how it goes!

Unfortunately I didn't get insurance yet Smiley cry That is smart to go to a third party jeweler though. Maybe I'll give that a try. Thank you

My sister had a similar issue with Kay's, they resized her ring, still too big, resized it again and it was all messed up. They gave her a new ring and resized it and then a stone fell out. So she got the ring and barely got wear it before it was gone for months while they worked on it. She had her fiance return it and bought a ring elsewhere.

Unfortunately when re-sizing a ring, they do cut, melt and solder the ring which could mess up any engraving. But it sounds like it was just a schmit show anyway with everything else they did wrong and then rushing you out the door. I honestly wouldn’t trust any mall jewelry stores anyway TBH.

Do you have a Shane Company store in your area?

I would not have a different jeweler touch it until you settle with Kay. Once another jeweler touches it, you may have no claim with Kay because you you won’t be able to prove who damaged it.

Sorry, meant to say Zales in my previous comment. However, Zales, Kay and Jared are all the same company.

This! You will lose any claim abilities if someone else works on it. We will never use a big chain store. We always use a local well known and trusted individual jeweler.

Mrs.lane2b, I will have to check and see if we have a Shane company around. Aren’t those kind of similar to a zales in the chain sense though?

I'm so sorry. Those big chain stores are absolutely horrible! Definitely settle the matter with Zales and don't stop until you are satisfied.

They were still in the timeframe where you're allowed to return it, I can't remember if it was 60 or 90 days, it may have been because it was the 2nd ring that was a replacement for the first too, I can't remember if that reset the clock. It was ridiculous how bad they messed up the first, it wasn't even round anymore. Then after the diamond fell out of the 2nd ring she was so mad she hated the sight of the ring.

My engagement ring and wedding band is from Zales. I am so glad I do not have to have them re sized. That's scary.

There was no need for them to touch the setting at all! Are you sure you actually have the same diamonds? The ring may be yours but the placement of the diamonds being different makes me think your ring was not only sized but tampered with.

I'm sorry you had this awful experience.

I had mine resized through Zales with no trouble, but I have read of similar problems as in this post.

I suggest keep fighting with them until you get to the top. Reviews, emails, phone calls, going in person. They destroyed your ring and you can't let them just walk away from that otherwise they will continue to do it to other people as well. Stand your ground and put up a fight.

I'm sorry to hear this. Make sure to take as much pictures as you can before going in, and get everything in writing if the manager make you any promises. Contact the corp customer service if the store didn't fix the situation, or worst case (which I think is the last resort), use social media.
