Zika After Honeymoon

Please be sensitive and thank you in advance for your help Smiley heart

I am getting married in 24 days and will be going on my honeymoon to Mexico just a few days afterwards. I know this is a Zika-affected area. When we booked our honeymoon, I didn't know I may have significant fertility issues in the impending future. Since then, I have had two surgeries on my reproductive system and have lost a Fallopian tube in hopes of keeping that ovary. We are 30 years old and have known each other since we were 11. We own a home together and are very well established in our careers... we did everything the way we wanted it to. Now, we're feeling sad and discouraged. We want children so badly and we were planning on TTC pretty much right away; my doctor has already mentioned IVF and anticipates it might be difficult.

Anyway. I don't want to cancel our honeymoon. Also-- just to call this out-- I would never risk it and TTC before the CDC guidelines of 6 months... totally not what I'm asking. I'm wondering if I would have a case to ask for a Zika blood test (for us both) so I can TTC sooner. Is that a possibility? Is the test accurate? Am I a bad person for wanting that?

It seems like a simple blood test but the CDC website just says you should wait and not to take away tests from those that really need it (showing symptoms, are already pregnant, etc etc). I know 6 months isn't long but I can start infertility treatments (Clomid) as soon as 6 months without success because of my situation.

I would ask your doctor these questions. I wouldn't necessarily trust information you get on a wedding forum.

Wishing you the best of luck Smiley heart

You could ask for it, but most fertility clinics are going to want you to wait 6 months either way. That would be a liability for them to help you TTC without waiting. This is something that we looked into extensively before deciding on a honeymoon destination.

According to the CDC, "No test is 100% accurate. A test result can sometimes be negative in the setting of true infection, and the results could be falsely reassuring."

    I wouldn't chance it.

I'm so sorry you are going through this! Are you able to change your honeymoon location at all? I'm sure it might cost, but the price could be worth some peace of mind and being able to TTC sooner.
