My Fiancée and I are getting married June 17, 2017 and we are starting to figure out our honeymoon plans. She is really worried about this whole Zika virus thing and most of the places that we have looked are in the Caribbean or Mexico. We will be on birth control at that time so not planning on getting pregnant though we'd rather not have to bring condoms with us either. Any advice on what to do or would we be ok and not have to worry about anything.

Also we have a budget of about $3000-$3500 so any ideas in which we could make that money go the furthest would be great too.

What BeachDreams said. Also remember that if you are found with a case of Zika, you will be followed-up with every month with bloodwork until you are clear, but that most cases of Zika are asymptomatic.

IF you or your partner get bitten by a mosquito that is carrying the virus, you run the risk of transmitting it via body fluid. However, you can mitigate the risks of contracting the virus by using bug spray, nets, etc. And mitigate the risk of transmission after contraction by using condoms. And mitigate the risk of pregnancy after contraction by using her other BC. Not much else we can say.

ETA Anal works too (against pregnancy, not zika).

So you just don't understand how birth control in general works. Got it.

Did you happen to go to North Shore High School in Indiana and have Coach Carr as your sex ed teacher?

Don't have sex because you will get pregnant and die!

Michael, dude, you need to do some reading up on birth control. You also need to know that no method of birth control is 100% so the less you want kids, the more you gotta control that shit. Some antibiotics mess with hormonal birth control--it's not that common anymore but I still have a friend that got pregnant that way. Talk to a doctor, ask all your questions.

I talked to my OBGYN about my concerns and she advised us to stay away from all Zika areas (essentially southern US, all of Central and South America and the Caribbean). We aren't planning to get pregnant, but no form of hormonal birth control is 100% effective. I could get bitten or if he does, he could transmit Zika to me through his sperm for six months even if he's asymptomatic.

Honestly, birth defects can happen in any pregnancy, but this is one serious problem that we know a cause for. Even though we're not trying to get pregnant, it's still not worth the chance to us. I can't imagine getting pregnant in that 0.1% chance that my hormonal BC fails and having to watch our child suffer all because I wanted a vacation.

Depending on where you're located for flights, eastern Europe may be a good idea if your fiancée still has concerns after talking with her doctor. Budapest is amazing, relatively cheap to visit, and has the most wonderful spas! We went not long ago and it was around $800 round-trip from Dulles and our apartment was$40/night (US equivalent) about 3 blocks from Buda Castle.

My friends and I went to St Martin last July and loved it!! There was so much to do (2 different sides French & Dutch). We also went to Anguilla one day and St Barths another. We stayed at the Riu and it was all inclusive, flights included I think we spent about $1800 each not including the excursions of course

In agreement with most of the comments above. Remember that birth control in any form will not protect against the Zika virus. Yes, you must protect yourself with bug spray, lotion or essential oils for the compactness of packing. However, Zika IS everywhere and is also here in the US. We here in Nashville, have had at least 35 people come down with the Zika Virus and it is higher of course along the coast lines. So keep to your original plan of waiting until a year after your wedding and you should be good, unless of course you travel a lot, then again, take the ordinary precautions. Now, about some honeymoon destination suggestions, depending on where you live, you could get some great direct flight deals and some wonderful all-inclusive, adults only resort throughout the Caribbean and Mexico.

If you are not trying to conceive for at least 6 months then don't worry about it. If you are you need to not go to any Zika places. My doctor told me last week that FH needs use a condom for 6 months after we get back from a Zika area.

Getting Zika is not a big deal for adults. It's like a common cold. It's only an issue for conceived babies. If you aren't TTC then you don't need condoms if she's on birth control.

I just spoke to my doctor about this. she said not to travel to any zika areas, but you have to understand is the majority of places have zika cases. I'm origianally from (around orlando) florida and she even said i shouldn't go there, because zika cases have come up in miami. i said i have to go and so her response was then don't start trying until the female has been away from the area for at least 8 weeks and the male has been away for at least 6 months ( zika carries in males longer ) but again, it's up to you. we are going to see my family in March and then we are back to london and hopefully not have any problems because we wanted to start trying after november.

Please, for the love of God, do NOT listen to people here. Go see a doctor.

I wholeheartedly disagree with people on here saying it's not a big deal. My obgyn said don't go whatsoever. I rushed back after finding out my FH was going on his BP to a Zika-affected place, and she brought in her whole team to discuss it. They ALL felt that it was a big issue, but when I told them he had to go regardless and it was paid, they basically told us not to have kids for many years (and we are older and do not have many years!). Then they said they can do a special test for it, but it would be $2,000+.

Here's what they told me: Zika has only been around for a short time, so they have no idea how long it remains in the body. It's LIKELY that it will only remain in the body for a few months, but since they haven't had time to survey people affected by Zika years down the road, they don't know. It's probably 3-6 months, but it could be 2 years or 10 years or forever, but we can't know without time to research it. If you haven't even booked and having kids is a priority for you two anytime soon, choose somewhere else.

Two of FH's doctors are groomsmen and we asked them about honeymoon locales where Zika exists. Both said it was extremely overhyped and not to base your honeymoon destination off of it. If we go to the BVIs, we'll load up on bug spray like we do in any tropical destination. I say this as someone who is prone to mosquito bites - seriously, I get them through jeans and even in the winter.
