Zika virus / honeymoon plans

Has the Zika virus messed up any of your honeymoon plans? I'm about to book my honeymoon and we want to go to Dominican Republic but the CDC had just added it to the list I'm thinking of switching places now because of it. Any ideas for an all inclusive resort with a casino?

OK, here's the deal according to the CDC and UK health agency:

If you are bitten and infected, after 1 week you recover from your symptoms, and it clears your bloodstream. The virus will not affect fetuses conceived after that point.

HOWEVER, if your male sexual partner is infected, they can transmit the disease to you through their sperm for an unknown period of time - possibly as little as 2 weeks to 1 month. The public health agency in the UK is recommending men use condoms for 6 months after infection, as a precaution.

So if you're prepared to wait 6 months to TTC, go on your honeymoon and have a great time!

People considering cancelling trips--the correlation between the zika virus and microcephaly has not been scientifically proven. It is complete conjecture at this point. There is another way to prevent the virus: cover your skin and wear bug spray! I am allergic to mosquito bites (get hive-like welts) yet I have managed to travel to tropical countries and even hike in rainforests without being bitten. Do your research using reputable sources before you panic.

I'm not sure what we're going to do, honestly. We bought tickets to Punta Cana on Southwest, so we can change them and keep the balance for a year from the date of purchase. We'll probably end up going somewhere else. I'll be solidly in mid-30's this year, so I wanted to start trying as soon as possible.

Here is my thought, we don't know if and what this virus completely does. There is evidence to suggest it can be sexually transmitted and evidence that it can cause serious birth defects. We don't even know the timeline. AIDS is a good example of a virus that was rampantly spread before people knew the true effects. None of it is 100% certain, but I wouldn't want to risk that for my child. It's not worth the chance of a lifetime of hardship the virus can cause if contracted.

We are going to mexico later this month, not a honeymoon just need a vacation. We don't get married till august but I did call my obgyn just in case because I do want to try for babies after we get married. the advice she gave me was just be cautious and use off or whatever type of repellent if I plan to be in an area with lots of trees bushes and all that mess. she said if my plan is to lay on the beach sippin margaritas spray myself (sunscreen, then spray) and I should be good. good luck girly!

Please actually read the CDC website and not just the news. Not everyone who gets the virus has a baby with the syndrome (if pregnant). If 100% of the mosquitos had the virus you still only have a 20% of getting bit by one, then Even if you get bitten by a mosquito that has the virus, about 95% of the people don't get it.... From that only about half of the babies get the shrunken head syndrome. Doctors and researchers can't find any links between the virus and birth defects. Those countries can't handle the virus because they are third and second world countries.

We are actually contemplating canceling our honeymoon as well because we wanted to TTC after wedding and in the months after. We will lose about 500 dollars but honestly it is worth losing that then worrying about getting bit by mosquitos.

My FH & I are worried about the same thing! We are leaving from Dallas, TX to Montego Bay, Jamaica the day after our wedding, and the CDC just placed Jamaica on their list of infected countries. We booked our trip in November, and we can't get anything refunded. We don't plan on TTC for a year or more, but still, the possibility of either of us getting sick or having future complications as a result of the virus is scary.

Hey I am Dominican and haven't heard any cases of Zika yet or at least in Santo Domingo. But Dengue is more active at the moment (my brother and my niece had it). What my brother recommends is you stay at one of the many resorts that are there and wear lots of bug spray! I recommend the Dream Resort in La Romana it is amazing for newlyweds and even has a newlywed suite!

FH and I are planning to go to Jamaica for our honeymoon. I plan on going to the doctors before.m we go for his advice, but I guess we'll wait about until about a month after we get home in order to start trying. Not ideal, but I have a feeling this virus will spread like wildfire. Hopefully we'll know more by October.

Jaqui I would also like to know what bug spray you use. I hate using bug spray with all those chemicals because we really don't know what they can do to your body but it's better than getting this crazy virus.

We are getting married in September and plan on TTC right after the wedding. However, even if we were not TTC after the wedding we would not be traveling to an area with this virus. We do not know enough information about this virus to put our unborn children at risk. All of the information you are reading is speculation, nothing is proven at this time. So, sure you could take your beach vacation.. but at what risk? You never know what could come up in the future and that is not a risk we are willing to take. Their are plenty of beautiful places we could all honeymoon that have not been affected. To me this is all too scary to brush under the rug!

Mounting evidence is suggesting that microcephaly in these cases is not being caused by the Zyca virus, but by mutations caused by pesticides that are used primarily in those areas for harvesting fruit.

I hate to scare anyone further... but there is a new article saying that it is not because of pesticides and that it is most likely from the ZIKA virus....

I completely agree with you Brittany. We don't have a lot of information or what could happen for future pregnancies after you have already gotten sick.... so we are looking into safe honeymoons... any suggestions??

My fiancé purchased a honeymoon trip for us to Montego Bay. We are trying to get pregnant as soon as we get married. After my last trip to the doctor we have cancelled our Jamaica trip and are now going to Vegas! Smiley smile They do not know enough about this virus and we don't feel comfortable enough traveling to places where it could put me in any sort of danger.
