Zipper to a Corset Back?

FutureMrsR, on February 8, 2018 at 6:19 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 2 14

Has anyone changed experienced changing a zipper back to a corset back before? I bought my dress secondhand in September and it fit 100% perfectly, but when I tried it on today, I found it's too small in the chest area and won't zip. Is changing the back a complicated process, and will it fix my problem?

I'm hoping to call the alterations lady tomorrow, but it's not really pricing that I'm worried about -- I want to make sure it will work to make the dress fit! I'm hoping that whether I lose weight or not, the corset will solve my problems and let me stop worrying. I haven't really be insecure about my body since high school, but after buying a dress that four months later doesn't fit, I've been feeling very self conscious, and extremely aware of my weight -- and worrying about my dress is totally not helping. Smiley sad

Also, previously, the only alterations needed were to add a bustle -- can I still add that with a corset back?

I've attached two photos of the dress if that helps in answering the questions (not sure they're great photos though) -- the one of the front of the dress is from when I bought the dress in September, and the one of the back is from when I tried it on the first time last March.

Anyway, thanks in advance for the help!

I did this to my dress, it is two sizes too small but I couldn’t resist the price. I called the cheapest alteration company I could find and she added the corset for $25. Good luck, beautiful dress!

First of all, that dress is absolutely gorgeous! I bought mine at a consignment shop as well. It was too tight in the chest so I’m doing a corset back. The initial quote I got was $150 to do that, but I’ll take it to a different shop nearby and see what they quote when the wedding gets closer. The shop nearby my house is very reasonable plus she did my bridesmaid dress when I was in a wedding a few years ago so I trust her with my dress.

Beautiful dress!!! Changing to a corset back isn’t difficult and it won’t affect the bustle.

This will completely fix the issue. You can still get the bustle no issue. I've had it done to basically every gown I've ever owned, prom bridesmaid ect... I love corset back and price varyies from shop to shop

I bought a corset kit and decided not to use it, but they aren't that expensive.

I put a corset back into my FSIL's wedding dress. It wasn't hard but take that with a grain of salt. I have been sewing for over 15 years. The great thing about corset backs is that they are amazingly adjustable. And being laced into the gown the day of makes for pretty getting ready photos.

You can get both alterations - corset back and bustle - at the same time. One will not effect the other. I think they will be really pretty together on your dress depending on the type of bustle you decide on.

Oh gosh it’s not a DIY kit! It’s the kit you give to the seamstress with the parts!

I would first talk to a seamstress to see if it could be let out and keep the zipper back. Your dress is gorgeous as is. My dress was also 2nd hand and was let out by a seamstress without changing the back.
