Deciding where and with whom you should sit during your reception can be a source of stress for some couples. You want to sit where you’re most comfortable, but also don’t want to hurt any feelings in the process.

We’ve narrowed down the top seating options for newlyweds to help you decide which arrangement works best for you.

The Sweetheart Table
What is it? This is a small table for two, where the newlyweds sit together for a more intimate meal.
Best for: Couples who want privacy during the reception and who want to enjoy as much alone time as possible. Of course, it’s important to mix and mingle with guests no matter where you sit, but the sweetheart table allows couples to have a bit of privacy while they eat.
Don’t do it if: You’re super-social types who would feel isolated sitting alone during the reception.

The Family Table
What is it? The couple sits with their immediate families during the reception—usually parents and siblings.
Best for: Couples who are very close with their families, and whose families know each other and get along well.
Don’t do it if: You and your future spouses’ families barely know each other, or there are divorced parents who don’t get along well. Also, if you have a large family with lots of siblings, you might not all be able to sit at a single table.

The Head Table with Wedding Party
What is it? A traditional head table includes all of the members of the wedding party—and usually their dates as well.
Best for: Couples who want their wedding to be a real party! A head table with the wedding party can get a little loud and boisterous, but it’s all in good fun!
Don’t do it if: You have a huge wedding party (you may have to divide them into two tables if so), or a super-small wedding party.

The Flexible Seating Arrangement
What is it?There are a few options here. If you’re serving your meal cocktail style, you may not want to have assigned seats at all, allowing you to mix and mingle with all of your guests while eating. Or some couples choose to switch tables between courses so that they can spend time with both family members and friends.
Best for: A super casual atmosphere, preferably with a cocktail-style meal.
Don’t do it if: You’re hosting a formal wedding with a seated dinner.
