19 Oct, 2019The story of our wedding
We met on Match.com in April of 2017. We both knew there was something special happening, especially after going on four dates in the first week of knowing one another. Adam asked Lisa to be his plus one to a friend's wedding on their fifth date. After dating for a little more than a year and half, Adam proposed on December 21, 2018. He had driven three hours north a couple of days prior to ask Lisa's father for his blessing and they had a low-key evening with pizza at one of their favorite spots and then driving around looking at Christmas lights. When they got home, Adam insisted on opening gifts before they left town for Christmas with his family. He gave Lisa an abnormally large and light box that was filled with shredded paper. After some digging, she found a Chipotle gift card. Confused, she asked Adam if that was her gift. Adam then got down on both knees (not just one) and will assistance from their dog, Zoey, asked Lisa to marry him. He later reminded her that she had once told him all she wanted for Christmas was a ring, but if he wanted to get her something to open, it could be as simple as a Chipotle gift card!

As a result, we decided that we wanted to have our wedding somewhere in the Twin Cities and make it weekend affair. We hoped to have a fall wedding, but knew finding the right space with less than a year to plan would be tough. While researching photographers, Lisa came across a venue that she hadn't seen on any of the wedding website top listings - the beautiful James J. Hill Center (aka James J. Hill Library). It was the only venue they toured. There was an opening for a Saturday in October and the library setting had Lisa, whose favorite childhood move was Beauty & the Beast, swooning.
Once the venue was selected, we quickly moved to make our other vendor selections. One of the best decisions we made was hiring Meg from Meg'e Eye Photography for our day. The photos are unquie, beautiful and exactly what we wanted.
Remember the wedding Adam asked Lisa to on the fifth date, that was for friends Charlie & Kelly. It came full circle as they both officiated the wedding ceremony. One of our favorite things that we did was "Mission Impossible" where the DJ played the theme song and we ran to each table for a quick photo. It's called Mission Impossible, because you are supposed to try to make it to each table before the song is over. This means we have a picture with every person at our wedding. It's such a special keepsake.
We added a lot of personalized touches to our day. Adam made the donut wall display. Lisa's father made the wine box that was used during their wine & letter ceremony. Family wedding photos greeted guests as they arrived. There were also fun touches highlighting the fact that we were in an old library - Mr & Mrs book cutouts, a collection of books and library card table numbers. The guests also loved the favors, matches labeled with "The Perfect Match". The night concluded with late night pizza and a final dance to Billy Joel's Piano Man as is tradition where Lisa when to college.
Our welcome party and groom's dinner was held at a local brewery (Adam is a huge craft beer fan) with catered in Chipotle as a nod to the proposal. We also had a gathering on Sunday at another brewery for lunch with friend and family who were still in town.
