10 Oct, 2020The story of our wedding
After nearly 8 years of dating, long distance dating, and sometimes not so dating, Gabby and I got engaged on the Mendocino coast. We were enjoying a glass of wine on the deck of our cabin, taking in a beautiful sunset, when I got down on one knee and asked Gabby to be my wife. Mercifully she said yes, and we started on the journey of planning for our big day. It was a logistical undertaking. Gabby was still living in Sonoma at the time and I was living in San Diego. So we had to plan a home purchase and a move in addition to our wedding.
After Gabby moved to San Diego, we tried to find a venue that paid homage to both our love of wine and the beauty of the Sonoma wine country. When we found Milagro Winery we fell in love at first sight. Driving in on the dirt road, you become keenly aware that you are no longer in San Diego. Light dapples through majestic oak trees, row of grape vines dot the hillside, and the facilities are something out of Tuscany. Milagro offered an open house where we were able to meet potential vendors and start to visualize our wedding.

When the pandemic hit we weren't sure how or if we would be able to even have the wedding. We learned to be adaptable and to roll with whatever life and the health department may throw at us. We had to pare down our guest list and re-imagine our wedding, pivot, and re-imagine again. We truly went in, not really knowing what to expect.
What we got was an intimate wedding with our closest people, on a beautiful day, in a picture perfect setting. The Milagro team made sure we kept on track, but some of the formality went out the window on the fly. We were under time constraints to make sure we got our wedding party photos out of the way before the ceremony, so that Gabby and I could get our photos afterward. We rolled with the punches, right up to the point when the string quartet played the wrong song for our first dance. It was not a slow song, and we realized about 3 bars into the song that we were in trouble. Do we keep dancing? Does anybody notice? When will this song end? It was a moment of shared panic, humility, and laughter. We got to relive it again when they went into the right song. Do we keep dancing? I will not forget that moment for the rest of our days.
We spent the rest of our evening taking pictures at the stunning property before heading back to our house for an intimate and small gathering, which may or may not have involved Gabby and I riding a giant inflatable flamingo across a pool in our wedding attire.
