12 Jul, 2019The story of our wedding
"Every once and while, in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives you a fairytale."
I was raised on the Disney classics. My little sister and I grew up watching Cinderella capture the heart of her Prince Charming from our foldable Winnie the Pooh couch. It was only fitting, then, that I imagined what meeting my Prince Charming would be like. I had it all planned out: I would graduate high school, attend college, and then meet the man of my dreams. It's safe to say that nothing went as I had planned, in the best possible way.
As a freshman in high school, I was eager to get involved in extra curricular activies. I had a passion for singing and acting, so naturally I went out for the fall play. When the cast list was posted, I found out that a boy named Jacob Henning and I had been cast as husband and wife. After becoming practically inseparable backstage, Jake took me up to my locker and asked me to be his girlfriend. Little did I know such an innocent question would change my entire life. True high school sweethearts, the rest is pretty much history!
Continue reading »Throughout our years in high school, our relationship grew and changed as we did. In total, we attended over six high school dances together. To close friends and family, it was apparent that we were not only a couple, but true best friends! Jake was the calm, even-keeled personality that brought me back down to reality, while I was the excited, ambitious personality that inspired Jake to break out of his shell and try new things! We shared the things that we most enjoyed like watching movies, eating Monical's Pizza, jamming out to show tunes in the car, traveling, watching/playing sports, laughing incredibly hard, playing Ping Pong, and most of all, our love for Jesus!
After four years of dating and with the end of senior year approaching, it was time to make a college decision. We each insisted that we find the school that was the best fit, and then try to work it out. However, we quickly realized that the most pressing school on both of our minds was Butler University in Indianapolis, IN. When we committed, we shortly discovered that we had been placed just a room away from each other in the dorms! What a coincidence! (Seriously, we had NOTHING to do with this, it was God!)
Attending Butler together has been nothing short of a true blessing. Our relationship stood the test of time, and by sophomore year, there were rumors of engagement rings in the air! On February 16, 2018, Jacob assembled a team of close friends to execute his proposal. Tricking me into thinking it was a group Valentine's Day surprise, Jacob sent me on a romantic scavenger hunt around campus that concluded at the famous bell tower.
As I approached the steps of the tower arm-in-arm with some of my best friends, I encountered Jake's friends lined up, one with a box of chocolates and the other with a dozen roses. Thinking again that this was a group surprise, I nudged my best friend Allie Jones forward to share a moment with her then fiance, David. It wasn't until Allie took the chocolates and turned back towards me that I knew what awaited me at the top of those steps...my Prince Charming, and the start to our very own Happily Ever After!
"A Million Dreams" from The Greatest Showman filled the air as Jake descended from the top of the tower to escort me the rest of the way. This walk up the stairs will always be one of the most memorable times in my life. When Jake got down on one knee, it was all I could do to choke out the word "YES!"
Indianapolis has become our new home. Jake is currently pursuing a four-year Master's degree in Accounting, and plans to take the CPA exams upon graduation. I am pursuing a major in Arts Administration with minors in Strategic Communication and Theatre. I just recently returned from a semester in Orlando, FL where I got to live out my dream of working for the Walt Disney World Co. by completing the Disney College Program. Almost 7 years strong, we may not be the same 14-year-old's that met backstage and fell in love, but we certainly are still very much in love and enjoy doing life together!
It was only fitting that our wedding have a "Happily Ever After" theme. After selecting our perfect venue, Pipers at the Marott in downtown Indianapolis, we spent the next year and half planning our perfect day together. Our wedding colors were navy blue and pastel peach, with other bright colors such as coral, orange, and pops of yellow as accents. Staying true to the theme, I wore a cathedral-length ballgown dress with custom made cap sleeves. My dress was the Moira style from the Morilee by Madeline Gardner line. Also on theme were our reception table assignments, with each table number being a different Disney couple (the head table being Cinderella & Prince Charming of course!). We ended the day by riding away in our very own light-up carriage!
There were so many incredible moments at our wedding that it's impossible to simply pick one! My first look with my father was very emotional, and my first look with Jacob was filled with pure joy! I will never forget when we were lined up to walk down the aisle and all of my favorite girls wished me good luck and whispered "I love you" to me before they walked down the aisle. I will never forget how much FUN we had as everyone laughed and danced and partied the night away! I will never forget how our guests went wild when they found out that Jake and I's first dance was choreographed to a Disney medley. And lastly, I will never forget how *right* it felt sitting inside my new husband's arms as we pulled away in our carriage together. The love we felt on that day will be locked into our memories forever.
