29 May, 2022The story of our wedding
After a year and a half of sharing a tiny studio apartment during the pandemic, we changed to a long distance relationship while Kyle studied in Amsterdam for three months. At the end of his time, I went to visit him. He proposed on the Magere Brug bridge at night. Legend has it that if you kiss on that bridge, you'll be in love forever!
Deciding on a location wasn't easy. His family is from New York, mine from Oregon, we have friends living all over the US, and we live in California. We knew wherever we chose, the majority of our guests would have to travel. We chose a holiday weekend for this reason so people would have more time off, but that actually made it worse, because flights were pricier. We invited 62 guests, but only 32 were able to make it. We chose Oregon, because we wanted a lot of green (which you can't get in LA), and was easier for us to get to than New York. The place we found had a great open-air barn (covered -- perfect for Oregon rain!) with fairy lights.
Continue reading »The theme was Vintage Travel, the colors were various shades of muted pink. Most everything was either thrifted, or purchased from small businesses! I was making trips to thrift shops every single Saturday, but it was so cool to see my vision come to life! Some of my favorite things include the mismatched champagne flutes for my bridesmaids, the heart shaped map cutouts for table decor, and a pair of cool bicycle bookends that we are definitely keeping forever! Each table had a different city for its theme; all cities that we visited together. I made my own veil: 4 yards of extra wide tulle, and 650 hand sewn pearls! Worth it! It snaps onto the shoulder of my dress, so I was able to easily get it off for dancing.
The weather forecast for our wedding said rain the whole day, which was unfortunate, but we had a solid rain plan (and had actually turned down a venue because we didn't like the rain plan!, but on the day of, the sun actually came out! It stayed dry throughout the entire time, and only rained a little bit once everyone was undercover in the barn for the reception!
We did a first touch while reading private vows, then a first look/reveal. Highly recommend. It gave us a moment of quiet to be together before the craziness of the wedding.
My best advice someone gave me was this: at some point, pick a time to stop stressing. It really helped me. That gave me the freedom to stress as much as I needed to, but then told me when to turn it off and let things happen. Things will go wrong. But in the end, you get to marry the love of your life.
